글을 쓰는 것은 누구에게나 부담스러운 일이 아닐까? 딸아이에게 함께 글을 쓰자 했더니 얼마 동안을 망설였습니다. 오빠도 쓰냐며 그럼 가족칼럼이 되겠다며 하겠답니다. 그리하여 쓰게 된 첫 번째 글. 딸아이는 글쓰기를 좋아하지도 않고 오히려 힘들어 하는 편입니다. 너무 힘들어해서 한글로 엄마가 간단히 설명을 적고 딸아이는 영어로 쓰기로 했습니다. 무엇을 쓸까 고민하다 너의 이야기를 쓰라 했더니 과학프로젝트에 관해 쓰겠답니다. 딸아이가 7학년이 되자마자 시작된 계란 실험, 계란을 각기 다른 액체에 넣어두고 관찰을 하는 프로젝트였습니다. 물, 식초와 올리고당은 필수, 나머지 하나는 자유롭게 정하는 거였는데 딸은 와인을 골랐습니다. 아들 때는 식초에 넣어두고 식용색소를 넣어 실험했는데 올해부터 바뀐 듯했습니다.  매일 계란사이즈를 재고 변화에 관해 표와 그래프를 만들고 리포트를 내는 것이었는데 삼투압현상을 알게 하는 실험이었습니다. 딸아이는 한국 친구들은 어떻게 과학을 배우는지 궁금해했습니다. 실험보다는 교과서와 참고서로 배우리라 생각하는지 쉬운 실험이더라도 직접 관찰하는 게 더 중요하다고 말합니다. ‘딸아, 한국이 쉽지 않은 나라란다. 아마 너보다 더 많이 실험하고 있을 것이다.’라고 말하고 싶었지만 참았습니다. 이번 달에는 두 번째 과학 프로젝트를 시작합니다. 사이언스 페어를 준비하는 프로젝트인데 뭘 해야 할지 내내 고민 중입니다. 정해지면 두 번째 프로젝트에 대해서도 올리겠습니다. 참, 원래는 egg experiment 인데 줄여서 eggsperiment라고 프로젝트 명이 정해졌답니다.

The Incredible eggsperiment

My name is Junhee Lee. I came to America about four years ago from Korea and am currently attending middle school in LA.

Recently in my school, our 7th grade science class had to do an individual home project called the Eggsperiment. The purpose of the Eggsperiment was to see the changes in the egg’s circumference in different liquids through osmosis. The experiment had to be performed in four different liquids: water, vinegar, cornstarch, and fourth liquid of my choice. The egg stayed in the liquid for two days in each liquid and then switched off to a different liquid. We measured the circumference of the egg every day that it was in the liquid. Through the experiment, we learned osmosis, diffusion, and equilibrium.

The results of the experiment made me realize that whatever object had the higher concentration of water, the water molecules moved into the object with the lower concentration to perform equilibrium. Because of that, if I were to do the experiment again with different liquids, I know that I would be able to predict what will happen to the egg. The egg will get bigger if the liquid has a high concentration of water and the egg will get smaller if the liquid has a low concentration of water.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed the experiment. The experiment taught me a topic in a fun way. Also, it was really fun seeing the results and touching the egg with my hands. This was different than what typical 7th graders in Korea learn because they don’t do many experiments at home. Also, in Korea, they usually learn through books, not experiments. I think it is easier to understand a topic when you learn it as an experiment, rather than just reading about it because in an experiment you can actually see what’s going on.
