The rainy season or monsoon is common in many areas and nations in East Asia. It is common in Korea, Japan, China, and even Taiwan. The Korean monsoon occurs when the warm air of the Pacific Ocean meets the cool air of the Asian continent. The mixing of the warm and cold air causes winds and rain that travels all across Asia. Usually, in June and July, the rainy season begins in Korea. The monsoon that was caused by a mix of cool and warm air travels to Korea. There are sometimes days or even weeks of heavy rains.

People in Korea call this rainy season Jangma. The Korean monsoon can cause many problems in Korea. These heavy Korean monsoon rains can cause floods that damage many houses and buildings in cities and in farmlands. It can also cause a lot of damage to Korean farmers and their crops and animals. Heavy rains can cause heavy traffic in many streets and highways in Seoul and other major Korean cities. The Korean monsoon can damage telephone poles, cause car accidents, and bring out many other problems. It is important to have an umbrella during the rainy season in June and July in Korea.

동아시아 여러 지역 및 다수 국가에서 우기나 장마는 일반적인 현상이다. 한국, 일본, 중국은 물론이고 대만에서도 흔히 일어난다. 한국의 장마는 태평양의 온난한 공기가 아시아 대륙의 찬 공기를 만날 때 발생한다.

따뜻한 공기와 찬 공기가 섞이면 아시아 전역을 가로지르는 바람과 비를 일으킨다. 한국에서는 일반적으로 6월과 7월에 우기가 시작된다. 찬 공기와 더운 공기가 섞여 발생된 장마가 한국을 지나는 것이다. 며칠 혹은 몇 주 간 큰 비가 내린다.

한국 사람들은 이러한 우기를 장마라고 부른다. 한국의 장마는 한국에 많은 문제를 일으킬 수 있다. 한국에 이처럼 큰 비가 내리면 도시는 물론이고 농경지에 있는 여러 가옥과 건물에 피해를 주는 홍수가 발생할 수 있다. 한국의 농부와 그들이 기르는 작물 및 동물들에게도 큰 피해를 줄 수 있다.

큰 비가 내리면 서울을 포함한 한국 주요 도시의 거리와 고속 도로에 엄청난 교통 혼잡이 유발되기도 한다. 장마로 인해 전신주가 망가지거나 교통사고가 일어날 수도 있으며 이 외에도 많은 문제가 야기될 수 있다. 한국에서 6월과 7월에 나타나는 우기에는 우산을 가지고 다녀야 한다.
