In general, a human’s head has about 100,000 strands of hair but the interesting fact is that the hairs on our foreheads grow slower than the rest.

The major factor that affects hair growth is our hormone as it controls its growth and length. Hair grows 1.5 cm a month on average. However, there are some outside factors that affect hair growth.

For example, it grows faster in summer but the speed slows down usually in winter because our hair prefers warm weather. In addition, as we age, hair grows slowly. As for hairs on foreheads, they are more exposed to UV rays than hairs on the back of the head and because heat weakens hair protein, the hairs become very dry and tend to break easily.

Also, the human head holds more heat on top of the head so forelocks grow 10 to 20% slower than hairs in the back. Meanwhile, frequent drying, straightening, perming or hair coloring also makes forelocks grow very slow.

왜 앞머리는 유독 느리게 자랄까?  
 
머리카락은 일반적으로 10만개 정도 되는데 흥미로운 점은 앞 머리카락은 다른 부위에 비해 유독 느리게 자란다는 사실이다.

머리카락의 성장을 좌우하는 가장 큰 요인은 호르몬이다. 호르몬은 머리카락의 성장과 길이를 결정한다. 머리카락은 평균적으로 월 1.5센티미터 정도 자란다. 그러나 머리카락의 성장에 영향을 미치는 외부 요인도 존재한다.

예를 들면, 머리카락은 따뜻한 계절을 선호하기 때문에 여름에는 성장이 빨라지지만 겨울에는 성장속도가 느려진다. 게다가 노화로 인해 성장속도는 줄어들게 된다. 앞머리의 경우 뒷머리보다 자외선에 좀 더 많이 노출된다. 단백질은 열에 쉽게 손상되기 때문에 앞머리는 쉽게 건조해지고 끊어지게 된다.

또한 정수리 부분은 열이 많기 때문에 앞머리는 다른 부위에 비해 10~20%정도 자라는 속도가 더디다. 한편, 빈번한 헤어 드라이기의 사용, 스트레이트, 파마, 염색 등도 앞머리를 더디게 자라도록 하는 요인이다.
