For many generations and across many continents, children have had the same question on their minds: why do fingers wrinkle in water?

According to scientists at Newcastle University, pruney fingers make holding onto wet objects easier.

The scientists held an experiment where they asked people to pick up different objects—marbles and fishing weights—and move it from one container to another. Some of the objects were placed underwater to make them wet while others were dry.

Some people picked up the objects with dry hands while others first soaked their hands in warm water for half an hour until the skin on their fingers were wrinkly.

Results showed that when the object was wet, wrinkled fingers were much better at picking it up than dry hands. There was no difference between wrinkled and dry fingers when the object was dry.

Scientists discovered that when wrinkled fingers grab onto wet objects, channels made by the wrinkles let the water on the object drain away, creating a stronger grip. “Going back in time, this wrinkling of our fingers in wet conditions could have helped with gathering food from wet vegetation or streams,” explained Tom Smulders, the lead researcher of the experiment.

뉴캐슬 대학교 과학자들에 의하면 손가락이 물에 젖으면 쭈글쭈글 해지는 이유는 젖은 물체를 잡는 것에 도움이 되기 때문이라고 한다.

과학자들은 구슬과 어류 중량 두 가지의 물체를 한 용기에서 다른 용기에 옮기는 실험을 했다. 몇 개의 물체는 물 안에 적셨고 몇 개는 적시지 않은 채로 실험했다.

실험 참가자 일부는 마른 손으로 물체를 집었고 다른 일부는 손이 쭈글쭈글 해질 때까지 따뜻한 물에 30동안 담근 후 실험을 했다.

실험결과 물체가 젖어있는 상태에서는 쭈글쭈글한 손가락이 더욱 쉽게 물체를 집을 수 있었다. 물체가 마른 상태였을 때는 쭈글쭈글 한 손가락이나 마른 손에 차이가 없었다.

쭈글쭈글한 손가락의 주름이 수로 역할을 하여 젖은 물체에서 물이 빠지도록 하면서 물체를 단단히 잡을 수 있게 된다고 과학자들이 말했다. “손가락에 주름이 생기는 것은 과거에 젖은 식물이나 시내에서 식량을 모을 때 도움이 됐을 수도 있다” 라고 연구 팀장 톰 스멀더스가 설명했다.
