New research led by Dr. Lionel Dupuy from the James Hutton Institute, Scotland has developed the world’s first ever see-through soil. This is an exciting discovery in the field of crop science.

The synthetic material is called Nafion, which is often used in fuel cells and batteries. When crystalline Nafion meets water containing nutrients, it becomes a translucent form of mud. According to the research, the ‘see-through’ soil has the ability to keep water and nutrients, and sustain plant growth, just like real soil.

It took Dr. Lionel Dupuy and his research team almost two years to find the special soil. This discovery may help scientists study plant roots. Now, they may finally be able to see what really goes on around the roots that lie underground.

Dr. Lionel Dupuy said the discovery was an important step forward. “This is exciting because there are so many things to discover in soil and we don’t know yet what they are.”
