On August 28th, super typhoon BOLAVEN swept across the Korean peninsula pounding the coastline, especially the southern part of the region and Jeju Island with heavy rain and unstoppable winds.

At wind speeds of up to 50 meters per second, the massive typhoon uprooted trees and streetlamps, damaged houses and buildings, and left hundreds of people without power.

Many schools were cancelled and what’s even worse, quite a lot of farmers lost their crops just before the harvest season.

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. In Korea, storms that have wind speeds of over 17.3 meters per second are categorized as typhoons.

Typhoons are created when warm waters and moisture from the sea surface meet swirling winds. They come with heavy downpours and fierce winds. Typhoons have been seen globally and can form year round with peak months from August to October.
