A new fear has been gripping fishermen and beach-goers as tragic news spread throughout the country. An eight-year old girl died after being stung by a jellyfish at an Incheon beach on August 8.

This is an exceptional case, because around 360 people, on average, get jellyfish stings every year, and none of them have died until now, say doctors.

There are about 30 species of jellyfish that have been discovered in Korea. Among them, seven are found to be poisonous. These deadly jellyfish used to appear around the country during 2003 and 2009.

Since then, it seemed like they were dying out. But now, they have been spotted off the country’s western and eastern coasts, arousing public fear. The venomous species has been drawn to the waters because of the extremely hot weather, along with a rise of ocean temperatures.

A jellyfish sting causes pain and red spots and sometimes fever, muscle paralysis and difficulty in breathing. Some stings are more poisonous than snake bites. You can treat stings by wiping the wound with alcohol and getting immediate medical treatment.

해파리 쏘임은 통증과 붉은 상처를 일으키고 때때로 열, 근육 마비 그리고 호흡 곤란도 나타날 수 있다. 어떤 쏘임은 뱀에게 물리는 것보다 더 독성이 강하다. 쏘인 상처를 알코올로 닦아내거나 응급처치를 즉시 받아야 한다.
