There is huge concern for the city of Yeosu, which is hosting a global expo until August. Sources have confirmed that a shortage of hotels and inadequate transportation are threatening the world fair. Initially, Yeosu had the ambitious goal to attract 10 million visitors to the small southwestern port city in South Jeolla Province during the three-month event. Although the city has claimed that it is fully ready for the largest global event ever hosted by the coastal city, hospitality industry experts warned that it isn’t prepared to greet the 105 countries and 10 international organizations participating in the event.

Currently Yeosu appears to be suffering from a severe shortage of hotel rooms, particularly for foreign guests, and local transportation infrastructure isn’t adequate. Analysts and industry watchers have predicted that the expo-hype could die out if organizers fail to meet visitors’ expectations in the first few weeks of the event. To make matters worse, advance ticket sales have been underwhelming, indicating that the general public isn’t as excited about the expo as the residents in Yeosu.

Looking at the numbers, there are four hotels in and around the coastal city. Although there is a newly constructed hotel at the expo site, it only has 311 rooms. When considering that tens of thousands of people are projected to visit the expo each day, there is an apparently insufficient space to accommodate the incoming guests.

With only 1,000 or so hotel rooms available in and nearby the city, tourists may struggle to find a goodnight’s sleep. more bad news is that if a guest is lucky enough to get a room, he or she will be charged more than usual during the expo. With the summer holiday season kicking in, most hotels and motels across the nation are charging guests at summer peak rates. Sadly, the city doesn’t seem to have any tools to curb rising room charges.

A survey conducted by 125 travel agencies, hotels and airlines catering to foreign tourists showed that a lack of hotel rooms and bad transportation infrastructure are the main obstacles at the expo. Furthermore the domestic publicity campaign has been poor while overseas promotions haven’t been any stronger. Without proper lodging facilities and transportation, expo organizers have a lot of homework on their table.

The problem is they must submit their unprepared work right now.

125곳의 여행사들이 실시한 조사에서, 외국인 관광객들에게 음식을 제공하는 호텔과 비행기들은 호텔 방과 불편한 교통 설비가 이 엑스포의 주된 장애물임을 보여주었다. 게다가 해외 홍보가 잘 되지 않은 만큼 국내 언론 홍보도 부족했다.
