Sometimes, when we get tired of the same routine, it’s important to stop and take a break. How do you relieve your stress? Do you like to travel? Going on a trip is a lot of fun. You don’t have to go to another country, either. You can stay somewhere close and just relax and unwind from all the pressures of life. How often do you travel with your family or friends? I recently went on a trip to Gangwon-do. Join me as I recount my experience!

These days, cherry blossoms are in full bloom all across the country. There are many different places you can go to see these beautiful flowers. I chose to visit the Gyeongpo Cherry Blossom Festival경포벚꽃죽제 near Gyeongpo beach, which is located in Gangneung, Gangwon-do. It cost 30,000 won per person. My journey started at Bupyeong station at 7:30 AM and I arrived at Gyeongpo Beach at 1 PM. The tour drops by Ojukheon on our way to our final destination.

At first, we arrived at Ojukheon at 11 AM. Here’s a question. What do you know about Ojukheon? Do you know Yulgok Yi Yi or Sin Saimdang? Yulgok Yi Yi was born at Ojukheon, which is also where his mother Sin Saimdang was born. The Korean government appointed Ojukheon as the 165th Korean Treasure in 1963. It was built by King Jungjong during the Joseon Dynasty. It is known as one of the oldest pieces of Korean architecture.

As for Yulgok Yi Yi, he was the third son born to his father Yi Wonsu and his mother Sin Saimdang. He was born at Ojukheon in the Mongryongsil몽룡실 on December 26, 1536. As a philosopher, educator and administrator, his political thoughts became the origin of democracy. He wrote Maneonbongsa만언봉사, which called for the reformation of the government, economy and society. He also taught the king’s teachings to the country through his writings Donghomundap동호문답 and Seounghakjipyo성학집요.

We could see Munseongsa문성사 next to Ojujkeon. This is a shrine where a portrait of Yulgok Yi Yi is enshrined. Munseong is the posthumous name of Yi Yi, which was conferred to him by King Injo during the Joseon Dynasty in 1624. Surprisingly, the hanging board of Munseongsa was handwritten by former President Park Choeng-hee.

At last, we arrived at Gyeongpo beach at 1 PM. The weather was sunny but windy, with temperatures reaching 18 degrees Celsius. Countless cherry blossoms were in full bloom around the beach. The visitors, who came from all over the country, were fascinated by the beautiful flowers. They were busy taking pictures of the white and pink colored flowers. The festival also offered a variety of interesting attractions, such as an exhibition of illustrated poems and a marketplace. Interestingly, the Chamsori Gramophone & Edison Science Museum참소리축음기에디슨과학박물관 was located close by, which appeared on the hit KBS program One Day Two Nights1박 2일.

I traveled to Gyeongpo by bus. Surprisingly, there wasn’t any traffic, which is rare for the weekend. In addition, I could relax while I was on the bus. When we arrived at our destination, we had some free time. So, we could visit several places during the day. I was very satisfied with my trip.
