Compulsory military service is something no Korean male citizen can avoid. Many believe the system is unfair because they are called up in the prime of their lives. It is logical that no one wants to waste away their 20s. Some would even love to postpone the call of duty until their 30s, a time considered relatively less important. Luckily for Arsenal forward Park Chu-young, he no longer needs to be concerned about serving his country.

The 26 year old can postpone serving in the military until he is 37. The 10-year residency visa he received when moving to AS Monaco from FC Seoul in September 2008 allows the football star to be legally exempt from conscription during his stay abroad. Thus, Park will be able to continue his career in football outside the nation for another decade. According to the Korean Conscription Law, any domestic commercial activity of over 60 days automatically cancels the visa.

Fortunately for Park, his activities are under the supervision of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC)대한올림픽위원회. Such activities, under the KOC, are deemed non-commercial so Park can freely visit Korea and practice for the national team. Sources said the Gunners’ forward had been planning to return to Korea in 2015 to serve with the National Police Agency경찰청 and continue his career in the domestic league.

Now, Park has changed that course of action and decided to stay on Europe to concentrate in his career. Another issue was his residency visa, which is not for England, where the striker is currently playing. Park’s agency has confirmed that current residence is irrelevant as long as there is a valid visa. The nation’s soccer fans are showing divided opinions on Park’s declaration.

Countless fans posted congratulatory messages to the former national team captain for being able to represent the nation without the stress of conscription. On the contrary, there are those who argue that Park is using loopholes in the legal system to his advantage. Regardless of the different views on the matter,  the reality is that serving in the military is a career determining factor for professional Korean athletes. Their 20s is a time when athletes can develop to their highest potentials. The truth is two years in the military can have severe consequences. Nevertheless, all citizens must start their military service before their 29th birthday if they have no academic obligations. For the Gunners’ forward, delayed conscription is certainly great news. However,  the announcement is creating a dilemma and perpetual controversies surrounding the compulsory military service for star athletes in Korea.

병역 논란을 일으킨 박주영

의무적인 군복무는 한국 남자라면 절대 피할 수 없는 것이다. 대부분 이 제도가 남자들의 전성기에 소집되기 때문에 부당하다고 생각한다. 어느 누구도 20대를 낭비하고 싶지 않을 것이다.

그가 2008년 9월 FC 서울에서 AS 모나코로 이적했을 때 받은 10년 체류 허가 비자때문에 이 축구 스타가 해외에 머무르는 동안 합법적으로 병역 의무를 면제받을 수 있게 된 것이다.

따라서, 박주영은 다시 10년 동안 외국에서 축구 선수 생활을 계속할 수 있을 것이다.
한국의 병역법에 따르면, 60일 이상 어떤 국내적 영리 활동을 할 경우 자동적으로 그 비자가 취소된다.

박주영에게 다행스럽게도, 대한올림픽위원회가 그의 활동을 감독하고 있다. KOC 하에서의 그러한 활동들은 비영리적인 것으로 간주되어, 박주영은 한국을 자유롭게 방문하고 국가대표팀에 속해서 연습할 수 있다.
