From February 13 to 15, for three days and two nights, The Teen Times writing and editorial staff and editor-in-chief held a camp for middle school and high school students. The main focus was to teach students the fundamentals and important elements of writing, listening, and speaking. Kevin Tak, editor-in-chief of The Teen Times, led the event, which was hosted at the International Seoul Youth Hostel in Namsan, Seoul. Students had the chance to utilize and develop their English as well as discover and sharpen their strengths and skills.

February 13 was the opening day of the Teen Reporters’ English Camp. The event began in the afternoon with a student-parent orientation and award ceremony. Each and every student received a certificate and a reporter’s ID badge; others were given awards for their above-and-beyond accomplishments. Parents watched as their children walked up to the stage to shake hands with Chairman, Lee Deok-soo, and president, Lee Jeong-shik, and receive their certificates and awards. Afterwards, The Teen Times staff and the Teen Reporters gathered to take group pictures. When students said their goodbyes to their parents, the camp  officially started.

According to Tak, there were hundreds of applicants who wished to attend the event. Only 45 were selected and invited to come. Although the rigorous and competitive application process had some students a little apprehensive and timid, Tak made sure that the Teen Reporters broke out of their shells.

The first day had a laidback tone. Students gathered together to play icebreakers and teamwork games. Afterwards, teams were assigned and two topic questions were given to students. Tak then taught a two-hour lesson on the essentials of writing a persuasive article and giving a presentation. On the second day, more lectures were given by The Teen Times staff and the Teen Reporters were instructed to write their own articles to make their own newspapers.
The main focus of the camp was public speaking and giving presentations. Tak put a lot of pressure on the camp participants and used many exercises that helped students develop their speaking skills. The editor-in-chief emphasized how a presenter’s speech should be clear and vociferous. Body gestures were also mentioned, and students were told to always keep in mind where they place their hands, arms, and legs. Giving the audience eye contact was one of Tak’s biggest focuses as well. Students seemed to benefit most out of Tak’s lesson on panic management and improvising. Students were given the whole day to practice their presentations.

At night, before it was time for the Teen Reporters to give their presentations, Tak introduced an activity where panic and fear were induced. Students were put in the spotlight one by one, while the audience was instructed to do various actions to distract the speakers. Throughout the three days, students were told to think cognitively and stay open-minded.
   
“I don’t think there is any program like this. It truly stands out from other methods of teaching English,” said Michelle Kang, a staff member of the editorial department of The Teen Times. “Kevin’s lessons provided students with a new and active way for them to learn. Most importantly, it was fun.”

2012 틴리포터 캠프: 청소년을 위한 저널리즘

2월 13일부터 15일까지, 2박 3일간, 틴타임즈 기사 작성과 편집을 하는 직원들과 편집장이 중고등학생들을 대상으로 캠프를 열었다. 이 캠프의 주요 초점은 학생들에게 기본 원칙과 쓰기, 듣기 그리고 말하기의 중요한 요소들을 가르치는 것이었다.

틴타임즈 케빈 탁 편집장이 서울 남산 서울국제유스호스텔에서 열린 이번 행사를 진행하였다. 학생들은 그들의 능력과 기술을 발견하고 갈고 닦는 것뿐 아니라 영어를 활용하고 개발할 기회를 가졌다.

2월 13일은 틴리포터 영어캠프가 시작되는 첫날이었다. 이 행사는 오후에 학생과 부모가 함께 하는 오리엔테이션과 시상식으로 시작되었다.

모든 학생들은 임명장과 기자증을 받았다. 그리고 다른 학생들은 그것 외의 성과로 인해 상을 받았다. 부모님들은 그들의 아이들이 이덕수 회장님과 이정식 사장님과 악수를 하고 임명장과 상을 받기 위해 무대로 걸어 올라가는 것을 지켜봤다.

그 다음, 틴타임즈 직원과 틴리포터들은 단체 사진을 찍기 위해 모였다. 학생들이 부모님들과 이별을 고할 때, 캠프는 정식으로 시작했다. 탁 편집장에 따르면, 행사에 참여하고 싶은 수백 명의 지원자들이 있었다.

45명만이 참가하도록 뽑히고 초대 받았다. 비록 철저하고 경쟁력 있는 지원자들 중 일부가 다소 불안해 하고 소심했지만, 탁 편집장은 틴리포터들이 그들의 껍질을 깨고 나와야 한다고 말했다.

첫날은 한결 여유로웠다. 학생들은 긴장감과 어색한 분위기를 깨고 팀워크를 다지기 위해 함께 모였다.

그 다음, 팀이 배정되었고 학생들에게 두 가지 주제가 주어졌다. 탁 편집장은 설득력 있는 기사를 쓰고 프레젠테이션을 하기 위한 핵심사항들에 관한 수업을 2시간 정도 진행했다.

둘째 날에는, 틴타임즈 직원이 강의를 했고, 틴 리포터들은 그들 만의 기사를 쓰고 그들 만의 신문을 만드는 것을 배웠다. 이번 캠프의 주된 포커스는 대중 앞에서 말을 하고 프레젠테이션을 하는 것이었다.

탁편집장은 캠프 참가자들에게 상당한 압력을 가했고 많은 연습을 시켰다. 이는 그들의 말하기 능력을 개발하도록 도와주었다. 탁 편집장은 발표자의 연설이 명확하고 소리 높여 표현하는 것을 강조했다.

또한 몸짓이 언급되었고 학생들이 그들의 손, 팔 그리고 다리를 두어야 할 곳을 항상 명심하게끔 했다. 관객과 눈을 맞추는 것 역시 탁 편집장이 가장 크게 중요시하는 것 중 하나였다.

학생들은 탁 편집장의 극심한 공포를 관리하고 즉흥적으로 하는 것에 대한 수업을 통해 많은 것을 얻어가는 것 같았다. 프레젠테이션을 연습하도록 학생들에게 하루가 주어졌다.

밤에, 틴리포터들이 발표를 하기 전에, 탁 편집장은 공포와 두려움이 어디에서 유발되는지를 소개했다. 관객은 말하는 사람들을 산만하게 하기 위해 다양한 행동을 하도록 지시된 반면, 학생들은 차례차례 주목을 받았다.

3일 내내, 학생들은 인식적으로 생각하라는 말을 들었고 열린 마음을 유지했다.

“저는 이와 같은 프로그램이 있다고 생각하지 못했어요. 영어를 가르치는 다른 방법들과는 확연히달랐어요,”라고 틴타임즈 편집부 기자 미셸 강은 말했다.

“케빈의 수업은 학생들에게 배울 수 있는 새롭고 적극적인 방법을 제공해요. 가장 중요한 것은, 즐기는 거겠죠.”
