We live in a time when how you dress really counts. Fashion this and that, the world is now definitely full of ideas and stories surrounding high fashion. Although there are countless well-renowned fashion designers and leaders in the industry, it would be unfair to discuss the topic without mentioning fashion’s legendary figure, Karl Lagerfeld. The name might not be familiar to all but his signature look of a black tuxedo blazer, sunglasses and ponytail is something we have all seen the media at one point or another.

Lagerfeld is known as the creative genius and director of French power brand Chanel. He is now 73 years old. What we don’t know is that he is a renaissancwell spente man. Aside from being a talented photographer, he has published books, produced illustrations and even recorded music. Believe it or not, Lagerfeld started in an animated children’s film a couple years ago. An exhibition has opened in Seoul to highlight the designer’s photographic skills. Titled, “Work in Progress,” the exhibition delivers the first retrospective view of some 400 photographs Lagerfeld has taken since 1987.

According to press reports, the fashion designer photographed his work after his hired photographers failed to impress him. What’s very unique about the exhibition is that Lagerfeld adopted new techniques to produce his photos. Although he often shot his photos with an old Fuji camera, Lagerfeld used digital cameras, such as the Sony Cybershot, to produce amazing photos.

The spotlight of the exhibition is a series of panoramic photographs. They are photos of what looks like a short Asian man in a Charlie Chaplin-style tuxedo and sunglasses in comical poses. As one looks through the photos, he or she will realize that the man is indeed a woman, and a very famous one. They are the photos of Yoko Ono, the 78-year-old artist and wife of the late John Lenon. If studying photography is your thing, it would be time well spent to see Lagerfeld’s collection of photos. The exhibition is guaranteed to deliver his artistic perspective, views and passion in photography and printing techniques. Daelim Contemporary Art Museum in Tongeui-dong, central Seoul is hosting the exhibition, which will run untill March of next year.

디자이너의 사진 기술을 강조하기 위한 전시회는 서울에서 열렸다. “Work in Progress”전은 라거펠트가 1987년부터 찍은 400여 점 사진의 첫 번째 회고전이다.
언론보도에 따르면, 패션 디자이너인 그는 그가 고용했던 사진가들이 그에게 감동을 주지 못해 그의 작품을 직접 사진을 찍었다고 한다.

전시회에서 독특한 점은 라거펠트가 그의 사진을 위한 새로운 기술을 채택했다는 것이다. 비록 그가 오래된 그의 후지 카메라로 사진을 자주 찍지만, 그는 놀라운 사진을 찍기 위해서 소니 사이버 샷 같은 디지털 카메라를 사용했다.
