The Kids Times visited Yangwon Elementary School last year. This school is very special because there are countless mothers who are eager to study, despite their old age. Luckily, The Teen Times had the opportunity to meet them again at the 10th English Speech Contest제10회영어말하기대회at Mapo Art Hall MAC on November 16.

There is a saying that goes: “No man is too old to learn.” The mothers proved that this proverb is true. So aren’t you curious to learn about the mothers’ English abilities, as well as their passions?

Ilsung Women’s Middle & High School, under Principal Lee Sun-jae, offers very special education programs for grandmothers and mothers who didn’t have the opportunity to go to school when they were young. They complete their studies in two years, instead of the six years it generally takes to finish middle and high school. Recently, the school hosted a meaningful event because they celebrated the 59th anniversary of its founding. Starting with the alphabets, the mothers are now able to speak and state their opinions in English despite their heavy accents.

The participants of the competition consisted of 15 teams, who were challenged with various themes: Cinderella신데렐라, 2018 PyeongChang2018 평창, The Golden Ax and the Silver Ax금도끼 은도끼, My School Life나의 학교생활, Chunhyangjeon춘향전, Taegueki태극기, Kongjwi and Patjwi콩쥐팥쥐, A Fairy and a Woodcutter선녀와 나무꾼, The Old Man with a Wart혹부리 영감, Solo Adventure혼자 떠나는 모험, Mysterious Spring이상한 샘물, Snow White백설공주, The Beatles비틀즈, Steve Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Address스티브잡스 연설문 and Pinocchio피노키오. They all led their performance calmly without shaking with anxiety. Surprisingly, they acted like real actresses. Many audience members responded with loud applause throughout the tournament.

The Grand Prize winner of the high school youth group was a team who performed Chunhyangjeon. The winner of the middle youth group was a team that performed Steve Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Address. all other participants received  valuable awards as well. The event was a success. The performers were satisfied with themselves. Many spectators were impressed by the cast members’performances.

Are you afraid of speaking English in public? Or don’t you want to study? Well, you can do it, just like the mothers! They couldn’t learn at the proper time or even though they wanted to study. 어머니들도 영어를 말할 수 있어요!

키즈타임즈는 작년에 양원초등학교를방문했다. 이 학교는 많은 나이에도 불구하고 공부하고 싶어하는 수많은 어머니들이 있어 매우 특별하다. 운이 좋게도, 틴타임즈는 11월 16일 마포 아트홀 MAC에서 제10회 영어말하기 대회에서 다시 그들을 만날 기회를 가졌다.

“배움에는 늦은 나이가 없다”라는 말이 있다. 그 어머니들은 이 속담이 진실이라는 것을 증명해 주었다. 그렇다면 여러분은 어머니들의 열정뿐 아니라 영어 실력을 배우고 싶지 않은가?

이선재 교장선생님 하에 일성여자중고등학교는 어릴 때 학교에 갈 기회가 없었던 할머니들과 어머님들에게 매우 특별한 교육 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 그들은 중고등학교에서 보통 마치는 6년 대신에 2년 만에 공부를 마친다.

최근, 그 학교는 창립 59주년 기념으로 의미 있는 행사를 주최했다. 알파벳부터 시작한, 어머니들은 현재 강한 악센트에도 불구하고 영어로 그들의 의견을 말할 수 있다.

그 대회 참가자들은 15팀으로 이루어졌는데, 그들은 다양한 주제로 도전 받았다. 신데렐라, 2018 평창, 금도끼 은도끼, 나의 학교생활, 춘향전, 태극기, 콩쥐팥쥐, 선녀와 나무꾼, 혹부리 영감, 혼자 떠나는 모험, 이상한 샘물, 백설공주, 비틀즈, 스티브잡스 연설문 그리고 피노키오. 모두 그들의 공연을 떨지 않고 침착하게 선보였다.

놀랍게도, 그들은 진짜 여배우처럼 연기했다. 많은 관객들은 대회 내내 우레와 같은 박수 소리로 반응했다.

고등부 대상은 춘향전을 공연한 팀이었다. 중등부 대상은 스티브잡스의 연설문을 공연한 팀이었다. 다른 모든 참가자들 또한 귀중한 상들을 받았다. 그 행사는 꽤 성공적이었다. 공연팀들 스스로도 만족했다. 많은 관객들은 그 연기자들의 공연에 감명 받았다.

여러분은 대중 앞에서 영어를 말하는 것을 두려워 하는가? 아니면 공부하고 싶지 않은가?

자, 여러분도 어머니들처럼 할 수 있다! 그들은 적절한 시기에 또는 공부하고 싶어 했지만 배울 수 없었다. 하지만 그들은 “배움은 행복의 열쇠입니다”라고 말한다.
