There are many stray cats that roam around the streets of Seoul. Many people view them as unpleasant or unwelcome  because they tear garbage bags apart and make strange noises at odd hours of the night. Of course, there are those who feed them and even go so far as to take them in as pets. How do you view stray cats?
On November 3, teen and staff reporters from The Teen Times were invited to preview a film titled Dancing Cat고양이 춤 at CGV Theater in Wangsimni, Seoul. The movie is based on the book Hello, A Cat Felt Thankful안녕, 고양이는 고마웠어요. The documentary tells the story of two men who, by chance, encounter a few stray cats. The men end up looking after the cats. The two show that they have warm hearts. The movie’s ultimate message is that although we live in an increasingly hostile world, we should embrace one another and treat animals with respect and care. Let’s find out what our teen reporters had to say about the movie!

Kim Min-Young (Shinil Middle School)
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” -Mahatma Gandhi. This phrase emerges in the beginning of the film Dancing Cat. This saying strongly conveys the director’s love for abandoned animals. Dancing Cat is a documentary about the relationship between two men and many stray cats. The movie’s message is simply that we should love and look after abandoned animals. Our nation tragically has a high number of homeless animals. I agreed with the stereotype abandoned animals have. I thought they were just useless and harmful, which is an idea that is shared by most Koreans. However, the film shows people loving and looking after these homeless animals. It stressed our need to care for them. This film helped eliminate stereotypes towards abandoned animals and gave me the courage to want to warmly approach them. I hope that this documentary can change our nation’s negative thoughts on abandoned animals.

Cats! What about cats? That was the first question that flashed through my mind as I settled down in my seat to watch the movie. My answer was this: They are the little creatures with big glowing eyes with pointed ears, they sneak around at night and they stay away from human activity. many people have negative views on stray cats that are mostly false. After watching Dancing Cat, this is because by seeing this movie, I found that stray cats are actually very cute, adorable and friendly creatures. I learned that their wariness of people disappeared once they get to know us. I was surprised at how well two totally different species could get along with each other so well. All this time, I thought that animals befriending humans was not possible. I didn’t believe people when they said that their pets were their best friends.  even though there are a lot of cats wandering around in my neighborhood, I have never given any thought to befriend them. All the cats in my neighborhood just seem to avoid humans. However, after watching this movie, I began to think that maybe if we approach them first, they might turn out to be very good friends, like in Dancing Cat. Now, I have a different opinion on cats that live in the streets: These cute little creatures with big shining eyes can be wonderful friends to humans.

길고양이들에 대한 인식을 전환해야 할 때

서울 거리에서 배회하는 길고양이들이 많다. 많은 사람들은 그들을 불쾌하거나 반갑지 않게 본다. 왜냐하면 그들은 쓰레기 봉투를 찢어 버리고 한밤중에 이상한 소리를 내기 때문이다. 물론, 그들에게 먹이를 주고 심지어 애완동물로 데려다 키우는 사람들도 있다.

여러분은 길고양이들을 어떻게 생각하는가?

11월 3일, 틴리포터들과 틴타임즈 기자들은 서울 왕십리 CGV에서 “고양이 춤”이라는 영화 시사회에 초대 받았다. 그 영화는 “안녕, 고양이는 고마웠어요”라는 책을 토대로 하고 있다. 다큐멘터리는 우연히 몇몇의 길고양이들을 만난 두 남자의 이야기이다.

그 두 사람이 따뜻한 마음을 가졌음을 보여준다. 그 영화의 궁극적인 메시지는 비록 우리가 점점 더 각박한 세상에 살고 있지만, 우리가 서로 보듬어주고 존중과 사랑으로 동물들을 대해야 한다는 것이다. 우리 틴리포터들이 영화에 대한 말한 것을 들어보자!

국가의 위대함과 도덕의 수준은 그 나라에서 동물들이 받는 대우를 보면 알 수 있다.’ -마하트마 간디. 이 명언은 영화 ‘고양이 춤’ 의 첫 부분에 등장한다. 명언만으로도 유기 동물에 대한 감독의 사랑이 전해진다.

고양이 춤’은 두 남자와 많은 길고양이들간의 관계에 대한 다큐멘터리이다. 그 영화의 메시지는 간단히 말해 우리가 유기 동물들을 사랑하고 돌봐야 한다는 것이다. 우리나라는 비극적으로 높은 수의 유기 동물의 수를 자랑하고 있다. 역시 유기 동물들에 대한 편견을 가지고 있었다.

나는 유기동물들은 필요 없고 해가 되고 대부분의 한국인들이 나와 같은 개념을 갖고 있다고 생각했다. 하지만, 영화에서 유기동물들을 사랑하고 보살피는 사람들이 나온다. 그리고 우리에게 유기동물들에게 관심이 필요하다는 것을 강조한다.

이 영화는 내가 갖고 있던 유기동물에 대한 고정 관념을 깼고 소위 관심이 필요한 동물들에게 따뜻이 다가갈 수 있도록 용기를 심어 주었다. 나는 이 한편의 다큐멘터리로 우리나라의 유기 동물에 대한 부정적인 생각을 바꿨으면 한다.

고양이! 고양이는 뭐지? 이 영화를 보려고 자리에 앉으면서 처음으로 내 마음에 떠오른 질문이 바로 그것이었다. 내 답은 이랬다: “그들은 빛나는 눈과 뾰족한 귀를 가지고, 사람들을 피해서 밤에 어슬렁거리는 작은 생명체야.” 이것은 많은 사람들이 가지고 있는 보통의 그러나 잘못된 고정관념이다.

이 영화를 보면서, 우리의 생각은 고양이가 가진 진짜 모습의 아주 작은 부분에 불과함을 알게 되었다. 고양이들은 정말로 아주 귀엽고 아니 정말 사랑스럽고 친구 같은 동물이었다. 나는 일단 고양이들이 우리를 알게 되면 바로 사람들에 대한 두려움이 사라져버린다는 것을 알게 되었다. 이처럼 완전히 다른 종의 생명체가 서로 얼마나 잘 어울릴 수 있는지를 보고 놀랄 지경이었다.

지금까지 나는 동물들이 사람들의 진정한 친구가 되는 것이 불가능하다고 생각했었다. 자신들의 애완동물이 가장 친한 친구라고 말하는 사람들을 나는 믿지 않았었다. 또한, 우리 주변에 돌아다니는 많은 고양이들을 보면서도 나는 한번도 그들과 친구가 되려는 생각을 해 본적이 없다. 내 주변의 모든 고양이들은 단지 사람들을 피하는 것 같았다.

하지만, 영화를 보고 나서 나는 만약 우리가 고양이에게 먼저 다가간다면, 그들도 “고양이 춤”에서처럼 우리의 매우 좋은 친구가 될 수 있을지 모른다는 생각을 하였다. 좀 전에 내가 스스로에게 물었던 길고양이들에 대한 질문에 대한 답은 이제 “그들은 매우 귀여운 작은 생명체, 빛나는 큰 눈과 뾰쪽한 귀를 가진, 사람들의 멋진 친구들이야”가 되었다.
