Why do we learn English? Do we learn English in order to enter a prestigious university or to make our parents happy? Or even to make our teachers happy? On June 18, the students from Sangmyung Middle School’s English newspaper club visited the head office of The Teen Times in Yeongdeungpo-gu to find the answer. Our lecturer, Julia Baik, was waiting for us when we got there.

The Teen Times is the number one newspaper for teens, so we were a little nervous. However, Julia was very funny and her presentation made us relax and participate in the lecture. She explained to us the reasons why learning English is good for our future, and taught us the best ways to study English. She also answered our questions at the end and showed us her office-the real office of a newspaper company. It was truly fascinating.

What really interested me was Julia’s idea of writing. I personally like writing, so it was very helpful to me. She said that when you are writing, especially articles, it is important to make an outline of the contents first and check at the end to make sure that you have included the six important elements: who, when, where, what, how, and why.

I also wanted to get some tips on writing a good essay. Julia said that the most important part about writing is to read a lot. I really agree with her because when I was younger, I didn’t read that much, so I couldn’t write well. However, as I grew up, I began to use vocabulary from the books I read. I also practiced a lot, and these things really helped improve my writing ability. I thought her suggestions were not only helpful for students who need to learn how to write in English, but also for students who need to learn how to write in Korean.

We were very grateful for her insightful answers. Since we were planning to write our school newspaper on our own, her answers meant a lot to us. One member in my group asked Julia what we should do when same members of a group do not want to participate in a project. This is one of the main problems we are struggling with. Julia said that a leader has to give each of the members a role that they can be responsible for. Also, even if someone doesn’t do a good job or makes lots of mistakes, other members need to encourage them and always work as a team. I thought this was the perfect solution to our problem.

After the lecture, Julia showed us the office. I was really excited when I entered it. It looked like a regular office, except there were newspapers everywhere. I was a little sad that I couldn’t see the machines printing out newspapers, but it felt great to be in a place where all the articles that I read were being made. It made me feel like I had become a real reporter.

It was really a great experience and an opportunity to get to know more about writing articles and newspapers. The lecture not only taught us how to write well and how to have fun learning English, but it also gave us valuable lessons. Most of the time, students including myself, have trouble concentrating on a presentation because we think a presentation is usually centered solely on the lecturer. However, I learned that listeners can understand better when they actively participate in the lecture. The most important thing of all, though, is that we should find our own ways to learn English. You know what people say: “If you cannot avoid it, ENJOY it!”

우리는 영어를 왜 배우는 걸까? 우리는 일류 대학에 들어가기 위해 혹은 우리 부모님을 행복하게 해드리기 위해 영어를 배우는 걸까? 아니면 우리 선생님들을 기쁘게 해드리기 위해? 6월 18일, 상명중학교 영어 신문 동아리 학생들이 그 대답을 찾기 위해 영등포구에 위치한 틴타임즈 본사를 방문했다. 줄리아 백(백윤정) 편집장님이시자, 오늘의 강사님께서 우리가 도착하기를 기다리고 계셨다.

틴타임즈는 청소년 신문 중 1위이기에 우리는 다소 긴장이 되었다. 하지만, 줄리아는 매우 유쾌했고 그녀의 발표가 우리는 편안하게 만들어줬으며 그 강의에 몰두하게 했다. 그녀는 우리에게 영어를 배우는 것이 우리 미래에 왜 좋은지를 설명했고 영어를 공부하는 최선의 방법을 가르쳐 주었다.

그녀는 또한 마지막에 우리 질문에 대답해 주었고 우리에게 그녀의 사무실 즉 신문사 사무실을 보여주었다. 그것은 정말 대단히 흥미로웠다.

내가 가장 흥미로웠던 것은 글쓰기에 대한 줄리아의 생각이었다. 나는 개인적으로 글쓰는 것을 좋아하기에 나에게 매우 도움이 되었다. 그녀는 글 특히 기사를 쓸 때, 먼저 내용물의 개요를 작성하고 마지막에 육하 원칙 즉 누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇을, 어떻게 그리고 왜를 반드시 포함했는지를 확인하는 것이 중요하다고 말했다.

나는 또한 좋은 에세이를 쓰는 데 몇 가지 팁을 얻고 싶었다. 줄리아는 글쓰기에서 가장 중요한 것은 많이 읽는 것이라고 말했다. 나는 그녀의 말에 진심으로 동의한다.

어릴 때 나는 책을 많이 읽지 않아서 글을 잘 쓸 수 없었다. 하지만, 자라면서, 나는 읽는 책에서 어휘를 이용하기 시작했다. 또한 나는 많이 연습했고 이런 것들이 나의 글쓰기 능력을 향상시키는 데 도움을 주었다.

나는 그녀의 제안이 영어로 글을 쓰는 방법을 배울 필요가 있는 학생들뿐 아니라 한국어로 글을 쓰는 방법을 배워야 하는 학생들에게도 도움을 줄 것이라고 생각했다.

우리는 그녀의 통찰력 있는 대답에 감사했다. 우리가 직접 우리 학교 신문을 만들 계획이기 때문에, 그녀의 대답은 우리에게 많은 의미가 있었다. 우리 그룹 중 한 친구가 한 그룹의 어떤 친구들이 어떤 프로젝트에 참여하고 싶지 않을 때 우리가 어떻게 해야 되는지를 줄리아에게 질문했다. 이는 우리가 해결해야 할 주된 문제들 중 하나이다.

줄리아는 지도자는 각 구성원들이 책임을 질 수 있도록 역할을 주어야 한다고 말했다. 또한 만약 누군가 잘 못 하거나 많은 실수를 한다면, 다른 구성원들은 그들을 격려하고 항상 팀으로서 일을 해야 한다고 말했다. 나는 이것이 우리 문제에 대한 완벽한 해결책이라고 생각했다.

강의가 끝나고, 줄리아는 우리에게 사무실을 보여주었는데, 나는 그 곳을 들어가는 순간이 매우 설렜다. 그 곳은 모든 곳에 신문이 있는 것 말고는 평범한 사무실처럼 보였다. 나는 신문을 인쇄하는 기계를 볼 수 없어 조금 아쉬웠지만, 내가 읽고 있는 모든 기사가 만들어지는 곳에 있게 되어 뿌듯함을 느꼈다. 나로 하여금 진짜 기자가 되고 싶게끔 만들었다.

기사와 신문에 대해 더 많이 알 수 있었던 정말 좋은 경험이었고 기회였다. 강의는 우리에게 글을 잘 쓰는 방법과 영어를 재미있게 배우는 방법을 가르쳐줬을 뿐 아니라 귀중한 수업이 되었다. 나를 비롯한 학생들이 생각하는 대부분의 프레젠테이션은 보통 오로지 강사 중심으로 진행되기 때문에 발표에 집중하는 것이 좀처럼 어려웠다.

하지만, 나는 청자들이 강의에 적극적으로 참여할 때 좀 더 이해하기 쉽다는 것을 배웠다. 모든 것 중 가장 중요한 것은 우리가 영어를 배우기 위해 우리만의 방법을 찾아야 한다는 것이었다. 이런 말이 있지 않은가, “피할 수 없으면, 즐겨라!”
