The 2011 Seoul International Book Fair was held at the COEX building and lasted for 4 days from the 15th of June to the 19th. The Seoul International Book Fair, or SIBF for short, is held every year. Book companies and organizations from various nations gather in the capital of South Korea to participate in the annual event, welcoming readers of all ages.

Books, by definition, are sheets of papers with words, illustrations, or blank pages bound together at a hinge (the spine of the book). Books don’t need to have words in them to qualify as a book. They don’t need to have pictures, nor do they need to have drawings. Moreover, they don’t even need to have paper - what with the surge in electronic reading materials being produced. This year’s SIBF event introduced to us to the rising popularity and selection of paperless, digital books called “E-books.” These books can be read digitally through devices such as the Apple iPad, Kindle, or Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. The event held an “E-square,” where E-books were on display. Aside from reading from the devices, reader could also browse audio and gaming options.

The SIBF 2011 had many other new attractions. In one corner, they had the “Korean Centennial Writers in 2011” which showcased the literary works of eight Korean writers who were born a hundred years ago. Documents relating to the writers were also exhibited. Another interesting display was called the “Illustrator’s Wall” which showcased the works of 120 illustrators.

The sheer volume and variety of books available was phenomenal. From collections of artworks to volumes on teaching, there was something there for everyone. They also had books for entertainment and sections specifically catering to kids and young readers. I spoke with Kim Na-ree, a six-year-old kindergartener who came to the event with her grandfather. She said she took an hour-long car ride to attend the book fair and to look at the children books they had on display. When I asked her if she had purchased anything, she said she very much wanted to get some coloring books for herself and her brother, who is four year old. Her grandfather told me that he thought the event was an excellent place for kids as well as adults.

After the talk, I realized just how much this fair had to offer. People from all age groups and ethnicities could come here to enjoy reading their favorite piece of literature. Be it through the traditional, artistic, or electronic format, books can unify, educate, and thoroughly inspire. Applause is in order for the Korean Publishers Association for putting this whole event together. 서울국제도서박람회

2011 서울국제박람회가 코엑스에서 열렸고 6월 15일에서 19일까지 4일간 계속되었다. 서울국제박람회 혹은 약칭으로 SIBF는 매년 열린다. 다양한 국가들의 출판사들과 단체들은 모든 세대의 독자들을 맞이하면서, 연간 행사에 참여하기 위해 한국의 수도로 모인다.

말 그대로 책은 글, 그림 혹은 백지로 된 여러 장의 종이가 긴밀하게 묶여 있다. 책은 책으로서의 자격을 갖추기 위해 꼭 글을 넣을 필요는 없다. 책은 사진도 그림도 굳이 필요 없다. 게다가, 그들은 종이를 사용할 필요도 없다 ?전자 읽기 도구 생산이 급증하면서.

올해의 SIBF 행사는 급증하는 인기와 종이를 쓰지 않는 일명 ‘이북’으로 불리는 디지털 책의 선정으로 소개되었다. 이러한 책들은 애플 아이패드, 킨들 또는 삼성의 갤럭시 탭과 같은 장치들을 통해 디지털 방식으로 읽힐 수 있다. 그 행사는 이북이 전시되어 있는 이스퀘어에서 열렸다. 그 장치들로부터 읽는 것 외에, 독자들은 오디오와 게임을 둘러볼 수 있다.

얇고 이용 가능한 다양한 책들은 경이적이었다. 미술작품집에서 교과서까지, 모든 사람을 위한 책들이 있었다. 그것들에는 또한 오락 위주의 책과 어린이와 젊은 독자들의 구미에 정확히 맞춘 부문들이 있었다. 나는 할아버지와 함께 행사에 온 6살배기 유치원생 김나래와 이야기를 나누었다.

그녀는 책 박람회에 와서 전시되어 있는 어린이 책들이 보기 위해 오랜 시간 차를 타고 왔다고 말했다. 그녀에게 만약 무엇이든 구입할 수 있는지의 여부를 물었을 때, 그녀는 자신과 4살인 그녀의 동생을 위해 그림책 몇 권을 정말 얻고 싶다고 말했다. 그녀의 할아버지는 내게 이 행사가 어른들뿐 아니라 아이들을 위한 훌륭한 장소라고 생각하신다고 말했다.

대화가 끝난 후, 나는 이 박람회가 얼마나 많은 것을 부여했는지를 깨달았다. 세대를 막론하고 민족성을 가진 사람들은 이 문학의 재미있는 부분들을 즐겨 읽기 위해 이 곳에 왔다. 전통적, 미술적 혹은 전자 형식의 책들은 통합하고 교육하며 완전히 영감을 줄 수 있다.
