We all know the main man of Apple has been ill over the years. It became official on January 19 that the legendary CEO Steve Jobs will be taking his second medical leave. No exact reason for Jobs’ leave of absence is available and no one can determine the seriousness of his condition since Apple has completely shut off the information to the public.

Sadly, looking back at his medical history, it’s extremely difficult to believe his current condition could be incredibly positive. Jobs’ health problem was known to the public since 2004, when he was treated for pancreatic tumor; a rare yet not necessarily fatal form of cancer. While he was making headlines for the introduction of iPhone, Jobs took a six-month medical leave of absence during which he was treated for cancer in Switzerland. Soon after, he received a liver transplant in the U.S.

The major difference with this medical leave is that Jobs did not say when he would be back. In an incredibly sparse email to Apple’s employees, Jobs said that he hoped “to be back as soon as he could.” Many people are saying that he is preparing for the possibility that he will not come back to day-to-day operations at Apple.

While there is far too little known about anyone who have a similar medical history to Jobs, we do know that there are less than 1,000 others in the U.S. who suffer from neuroendocrine cancer who have had liver transplants. The disappointing fact is that a one-year survival rate for such condition is approximately 70 percent. What is scary is that the figures drop significantly over time. It is only 30 to 40 percent after five years. Even if Jobs’ body is adopting adequately to his new liver there should be complications with the drugs given to transplant patients, including diabetes, hypertension, and kidney problems. On top of all that, this type of cancer often metastasizes. If Jobs’ tumor has metastasized this soon, it would be cause for serious concern.

Apple Computing has been in a period of rebirth since Jobs returned to the company in 1998. Since his return, Apple has seen record profits, released multiple new product lines, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and the iPad. Jobs taking the position of CEO marked the first time in years that Apple turned a profit, most recently a new record profit of $6 billion. So the question becomes, what happens now?

The truth is that no one honestly knows. We can all speculate, but we could all be wrong. The only thing we know for sure is that after Jobs came back from his last medical leave, Apple announced and launched the iPad. If (or when) Jobs makes it back to his office, expect something big. If he doesn’t, however, don’t count Apple out. It has a huge amount of momentum. It won’t stop anytime soon.
