Sally loves to draw pictures. All kinds of pictures. When she was little, she was given crayons at school. That’s where her love for drawing started.

Each color has a special name, like “Forest Green”, which is Sally’s favorite, or “Fire Engine Red” or “Sunshine Gold.”

Let’s hear from Sally herself exactly how she feels about drawing and why it makes her so excited.

“When I pick up a crayon, I get ideas about inventions,” explains Sally. “They just come to me easily. The first idea I ever got was to create a family car that you can fold up into a suitcase and carry with you into the house. That way, you don’t have to find a parking space on the street.”

“Sometimes finding a parking space takes a long time, and you have to go around and around when you’d much rather go home and eat dinner. You could put the car in a garage where nice men will put it in a safe spot, but my father says doing that can get pretty expensive. So I’ve invented a special luxury car that can fold up. It’s not hard to carry. It’s just about as heavy as carrying groceries.”

It’s impressive how Sally’s drawing illustrates the way that this could happen.
“First, you press a button on the passenger side of the front door, and then the whole car shrinks slowly to the size of a pancake. At that point, you can fold it like you would a blanket fresh from the laundry. When it’s all folded, somehow it transforms into a suitcase and you’re good to go.”

“My parents love this idea. Even my brother has congratulated me. He’s asked if he can be the first one to press the button. Sure! I have lots of other ways to make life more effective and fun. For example: a toaster that pops the toast up into the air so that it lands gently onto your plate, or shoes that can be adjusted in size as you grow bigger.”

Sally loves to put her imagination to good use by thinking of things that would be helpful to others. It all begins with picking up the colorful crayons ― and then just seeing what happens!

<샐리의 발명>

샐리는 그림 그리는 걸 좋아합니다. 그림이라면 어떤 종류든 전부 다 좋아하죠. 어렸을 때 학교에서 크레용을 받은 후부터 그림 그리는 걸 좋아하기 시작했습니다.

색깔마다 특별한 이름이 있습니다. 샐리가 제일 좋아하는 ‘수풀 초록’, ‘소방차  빨강’, ‘햇빛 금색’ 같은 게 대표적이에요. 그림 그리는 것에 대해 어떻게 느끼고 왜 재밌는지 샐리로부터 직접 들어볼까요?

“전 크레용을 집으면 발명품에 대한 새로운 아이디어가 떠올라요.” 샐리가 설명했습니다. “아주 쉽게 떠오르죠. 처음 생각해낸 건 여행 가방에 접어넣어 집 안으로 들고 갈 수 있는 가족용 자동차를 만드는 거였어요. 그렇게 되면 거리에서 주차할 자리를 찾을 필요가 없으니까요.”

“때때로 주차할 자리를 찾는 데 시간이 오래 걸려 집에 가서 저녁을 먹어야 할 시간에 돌고 또 돌고 해야 해요. 친절한 사람들이 안전한 장소에 차를 세워주는 주차장에 차를 둘 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 아빠가 그러시는데 그렇게 하면 꽤 비싸대요. 그래서 접을 수 있는 특별 자동차를 발명했어요. 들고 다니기도 어렵지 않아요. 식료품을 드는 정도밖에 무겁지 않거든요.”

샐리의 그림은 어떻게 이런 일이 일어날 수 있는지를 아주 인상적으로 잘 설명해주고 있습니다. 먼저 앞문 승객의 위에 있는 누름 단추를 누릅니다. 그러면 자동차 전체가 핫케이크 크기로 천천히 줄어듭니다. 그 순간 자동차를 깨끗한 담요를 개듯 접습니다. 모두 접고 나면 자동차 여행 가방 모양으로 바뀌죠.

“저희 부모님은 이 아이디어를 좋아해요. 오빠도 제게 축하 인사를 건넸어요. 오빠는 자기가 누름 단추를 누르는 첫 번째 사람이 될 수 있는지 물어봤어요. 물론 그렇고 말고요! 전 더 효과적이고 재미있게 사는 방법을 많이 알고 있어요. 예를 들면 구워진 빵이 공중으로 튀어 올라 접시에 부드럽게 떨어지게 하는 토스터, 혹은 발에 따라 크기가 조절되는 구두 같은 것들이요.”

샐리는 그녀의 상상력이 다른 사람에게 도움을 주게 되는 걸 좋아합니다. 이 모든 건 색색깔의 크레용을 집으며 시작되죠. 그 다음엔 무슨 일이 일어나는지 지켜보세요.
