There once lived a very lazy young man. He was so lazy that he hated doing any work around the house. The young man’s mother often scolded him. "How are you going to earn a living?" she would ask.

When the lazy young man was not dozing at home, he was dozing in a field under a tree and watching a fat cow grazing in the field.

“What a wonderful life that cow has!” the young man thought to himself. “She doesn’t have to cook or clean. She doesn’t even have to walk far. It’s a perfect life. I wish I were a cow.”

As he was thinking this, a strange old man suddenly appeared beside him. “Take this mask of a cow's head. Put it on and you will turn into a cow,” said the old man. The young man quickly put on the mask of a cow’s head and was instantly changed into a cow.

Then the old man pulled the cow toward the road that went to town. “Moo, moo, moo.” he cried, but the old man led the cow all through the market shouting, “Cow for sale!” It wasn't long before a farmer came up and paid for the cow.

As the farmer was leading the cow away, the old man said, “Oh, there’s just one thing I should tell you. Be careful not to let that cow eat any radishes. If it eats one, it might die.” “Thanks for the warning,” the farmer said, and led the cow back to his farm. There he made the cow work from dawn until dusk. The young man who was now a cow pulled a plow and worked and worked. He became so thin and weak. He knew that he would not survive much longer.

“It would be better to eat a radish and die than to let the farmer slaughter and eat me,” thought the young man.

So he went to a radish field and ate as many radishes as he could. Then he lay down and waited to die. He wept because he was so regretful for what he had done to his mother. After hours and hours of weeping, he realized that he hadn’t died and had changed back into a man again!

“Hooray!” the young man yelled as he jumped to his feet. Then the man ran home to his mother, and from that moment on, he stopped being lazy. He became very industrious and worked hard at every task. Soon his mother was very proud of him.

<소가 된 게으름뱅이>

옛날에 아주 게으른 젊은이가 살았습니다. 그는 너무 게을러서 집안일은 어떤 것도 하기 싫어했습니다.  “어떻게 먹고 살려고 그러니?” 젊은이의 엄마는 그를 자주 꾸짖었습니다.

게으른 젊은이는 집에서 졸고 있지 않으면 들에 있는 나무 밑에서 살진 소가 풀을 뜯고 있는 것을 바라보면서 졸고 있었습니다. “와, 저 소는 정말 살기 좋겠다!” 젊은이는 혼자 생각했습니다. “밥도 안 하고 청소할 필요도 없잖아. 멀리 걸어가지 않아도 되고 말이야. 정말 완전한 삶이야. 내가 소라면 좋을 텐데.”

그가 이런 생각을 하고 있을 때 낯선 노인이 갑자기 그의 옆에 나타났습니다. “소의 머리에 있는 이 탈을 벗겨 쓰면 넌 소로 변할 것이다”하고 노인이 말했습니다. “정말이요?” 게으른 젊은이가 외쳤습니다. “그것참 좋네요!”

젊은이는 재빨리 소의 머리에 있는 탈을 쓰고 순식간에 소로 변했습니다. 그런 다음 노인은 그 소를 끌고 마을로 가는 길로 향했습니다.

“음매, 음매, 음매.” 그는 울었지만 노인은 소를 끌고 장터를 돌아다니며 외쳤습니다. “소 팔아요, 소! 튼튼하고 아주 좋은 소를 팔아요!” 얼마 지나지 않아 한 농부가 와서 소 값을 지불했습니다.

농부가 소를 끌고 가려고 하자 노인이 말했습니다. “아, 한 가지 말할 게 있소. 이 소가 무를 먹지 못하게 하시오. 하나라도 먹으면 소는 아마 죽게 될 거요.”

농부는 “알려줘서 고맙다”고 인사한 후, 소를 끌고 농장으로 돌아갔습니다. 거기서 그는 소에게 새벽부터 해질녘까지 일을 시켰습니다. 소가 된 젊은이는 쟁기를 끌고 일하고, 또 일하고, 계속 일했습니다. 그는 점점 너무 마르고 힘이 없어졌습니다. 그는 자신이 얼마 못살 것 같다는 걸 알았습니다. “차라리 무를 먹고 죽는 게 농부가 나를 죽여 잡아먹게 두는 것보다 나을 거야.” 소가 된 젊은이는 생각했습니다.

그는 무밭으로 가서 최대한 많이 무를 먹었습니다. 그런 다음 누워서 죽기만 기다렸습니다. 그는 엄마에게 자기가 했던 일이 너무나 후회스러워서 울었습니다. 몇 시간이고 울고 난 후 그는 자신이 죽지 않고 사람으로 다시 돌아왔다는 것을 깨달았습니다!

“야호!” 젊은이는 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰며 소리쳤습니다. 그리곤 집으로 달려갔습니다. 그날 이후 그는 더 이상 게으르지 않았습니다. 매우 부지런해져서 모든 일을 아주 열심히 했습니다. 곧 그의 엄마는 그를 매우 자랑스럽게 여기게 됐습니다.
