This year’s World Cup has without a doubt cemented the modern day heroes of Korean soccer.Players like Lee Jeong-soo and Park Ji-sung proved themselves not just to the nation but the whole world.
Yet, while this tournament ushered in the heroes of today it also saw the exit of the legends of yesterday.

Indeed while all the attention was on the Red Devil’s young talents, many had forgotten the heroes of past World Cups. This was because they spent most of the tournament on the bench. Indeed it was a quiet exit for goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae and forwards Ahn Jung-hwan and Lee Dong-gook of the South Korean squad.

Both goalkeeper Lee and forward Ahn ended their World Cup careers without a minute on the pitch, while forward Lee Dong-gook made a less than triumphant exit in what is also his last World Cup.

Before the World Cup had even started, doubts were circulating over goalie Lee Woon-jae’s ability due to a lackluster K-League performance with the Suwon Blue Wings. While both his speed and agility left much to be desired, the 37-year-old managed to make it to the 23 selected to go to South Africa.

However, he ended up spending the tournament on the bench, with the younger Jung Sung-ryong taking the goalie spot after proving himself in early friendly games against Ecuador and Japan.

It was speculated that if the game against Uruguay had gone into a penalty shoot-out, then Lee would have been given one last chance to guard the goal for his country. However, the 2-1 defeat put an end to any hopes of the veteran stepping into a World Cup stadium as a player for the Korean national team.

Meanwhile, forward Ahn has also waned as of recent. Ahn was the hero of 2002, being regarded as the key chess piece that turned certain defeat into victory. Having scored goals against the United States and Italy in 2002 and performed well against Togo in 2006, many regarded Ahn as one of the Red Devil’s brightest stars.

Yet, this time round he wasn’t deemed fit enough to take to the pitch, when he showed a worrying lack of stamina in a warm-up against Spain. As a result, another veteran finished his World Cup career warming the bench.

Yet, the real tragedy of this year’s World Cup was Lee Dong-gook. Indeed while his team mates had chalked up notable achievements on the pitch in both 2002 and 2006, Lee had been absent from both tournaments. He missed the draft for 2002 because he was deemed to lack the needed stamina and while he improved for 2006 an injury meant he once again missed his chance.
 
This year was the last opportunity for Lee to make a mark at the World Cup and while he got some on pitch time in the games against Argentina and Uruguay, he missed important shots and ultimately walked away empty-handed.

Maybe this should be a lesson to the present heroes of Korean soccer and this year’s World Cup; no matter how good you are, everybody has to retire someday.

사실 모든 관심이 붉은 악마의 젊은 선수들에게 몰린 반면, 많은 사람들이 지난 월드컵의 영웅들은 잊었다. 이는 그들이 대부분의 경기를 벤치에서 보냈기 때문이다. 사실 남한의 골키퍼 이운재와 포워드 안정환, 이동국에게 조용한 퇴장이었다.

포워드 이동국은 그의 마지막 월드컵에서 그래도 멋진 퇴장을 한 반면, 골키퍼 이운재와 포워드 안정환 둘 다 경기장에서 1분도 뛰지 못하고 월드컵을 끝냈다.

월드컵이 시작하기 전부터, 수원블루윙스에서 활기 없는 K 리그 경기 수행 때문에 골키퍼 이운재의 능력에 대한 의심이 불거지고 있었다. 그의 속도와 민첩성 둘 다 불완전했지만, 그 37살 선수는 남아공 출전에 선정된 23명의 선수들 명단에 용케 들어갔다.

만약 우루과이의 경기에서 패널티킥 승부차기로 갔다면 한국을 위해 골을 지키는 마지막 기회가 주어졌을 것이라고 짐작된다. 하지만, 2대 1의 패배는 한국대표팀 선수로서, 경기장에 발을 내디딜 수 있는 베테랑선수의 희망을 꺾고 말았다.

반면, 포워드 안정환은 최근 부쩍 약해졌다. 안정환은 패배를 승리로 바꾼 결정적 체스 피스로 간주되면서, 2002년에 영웅으로 떠올랐다. 미국과 이탈리아와의 경기에서 골을 넣고 2006년 토고와의 경기에서 잘 뛰었기 때문에, 많은 사람들은 안정환은 붉은 악마의 가장 기대되는 선수들 중 하나로 생각했다.

하지만, 그가 스페인과의 친선 경기에서 체력 부족의 우려를 보였을 때, 이번 경기에서 그는 경기장에 출전하기에 충분히 알맞게 생각하지 않았다. 결과적으로, 또 다른 베테랑 선수는 벤치에서 준비운동만 하다가 끝이 났다.

이는 어쩌면 한국 축구의 현재 영웅들에게 가르침이 되어야만 할지도 모른다; 아무리 당신이 훌륭하더라도, 모든 사람은 언젠가 은퇴해야만 한다.
