The importance of debating can’t be underestimated. A debate can establish a mind set for students to confidently explore the most controversial issues in our society.

Contrary to the popular belief, English debate isn’t just about being able to speak the language well. To prepare for a proper debate, one must consistently train to spark his or her intellectual creativity and argument innovation.

After series of experiences in challenging debates, one will slowly feel comfortable when placed in either proposition or opposition teams. It was back in the winter of 2008 when the first English debate contest took place for the nation’s students.

Beyond the organizers’ expectations the contest attracted hundreds of students. The participation rate was at its peak and the first official gathering of the nation’s passionate and ambitious young debaters was possible.

For three years the contest has spread through many grapevines of students and it is now a prestigious event where young students can explore and challenge each other to push the limits of their knowledge.

Celebrating its third year, this year’s debate contest for the junior division was once again hosted and sponsored by Times Core. The preliminary rounds were held on May 22 and eight teams were selected to move up to the finals on May 30.

The winner for this year was team KAREN (Park Kyeong-seo and Jung Soo-yeon from Seoil Middle School, and Chung In-kyo from Dankook Middle School.) Second place went to team CONEXION (Kim Jae-hee of Kyungwon Middle Shool, Ahn Tae Eon of Yeoksam Middle School, and Rebecca Yun of Kwachun Middle School.)

While the audience of hundreds watched the final rounds, each team performed outstandingly. The participants brought great surprises as they managed to fully comprehend the controversial topics given to them for the debate.

Extensive team work, coordination and improvisation moved the judges. The winners were given a year’s worth of subscription to The Teen Times and The Kids Times. Congratulations to all.

토론 대회 한번 더!
토론의 중요성은 과소 평가될 수 없다. 토론은 우리 사회에 가장 논쟁이 많은 문제를 자신감 있게 분석하도록 학생들에게 사고방식을 성립시킬 수 있다. 일반적인 생각에 반하여, 영어 토론은 언어를 잘 말하는 것만이 아니다. 적절한 토론을 준비하기 위해, 학생은 지적인 창의력과 주장 혁신을 유발하도록 꾸준히 연습을 해야만 한다.

도전 의식을 북돋우는 토론에서 일련의 경험을 겪은 후, 찬성이나 반대팀에 놓여졌을 때 학생은 서서히 편안함을 느낄 것이다. 최초의 영어 토론대회가 한국 학생들을 위해 생겼던 때는 2008년 겨울이었다.

창립자의 기대를 넘어, 그 대회는 많은 학생들을 끌어 모았다. 참가율은 절정에 달했고 한국의 열정적이고 야심 찬 어린 토론자들의 최초 공식 모임이 가능하게 되었다. 3년 동안 진행된 그 대회는 학생들의 입소문을 통해 퍼졌고 이는 현재 어린 학생들이 지식의 한계를 밀어내기 위해 서로 탐구하고 도전할 수 있는 명망 있는 행사이다.

3회를 축하하기 위해, 올해 중학생 부문 토론 대회는 타임즈코어에 의해 다시 한번 주최되었고 후원 받았다. 예선전은 5월 22일에 열렸고 8팀이 5월 30일에 결승전에 올라가는 데 선정되었다. (서일중학교 박경서, 정수연, 단국중학교 전인교). 2위는 코넥션(경원중학교 김재희, 역삼중학교 안태언, 그리고 레베카(과천 중학교의 레베카 윤)

많은 관중들이 결승전을 지켜보는 가운데, 각 팀은 뛰어나게 수행했다. 가자들은 그들이 토론에서 그들에게 주어진 논란이 많은 주제를 충분히 이해하는 데 성공했을 때 매우 기뻐했다. 폭넓은 팀워크, 조합 그리고 애드리브는 심사위원들에게 맡겨졌다. 승리자는 틴타임즈의 올해 정기구독권을 무료로 받는다. 모두 축하드립니다.
