The Pacific Coliseum, the home of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks was crowded with a raucous crowd cheering desperately for its native sons. Mixed in the crowd were fans that waved the American flag, screaming for Korea’s archrival Apolo Anton Ohno.

For Korea, young and uprising speed skaters Lee Jung-soo and Lee Ho-suk patiently waited for their turn in the five-skater men’s 1000 meter short track final. The competition featured a dream list of finalists.

The world’s top skaters stepped up to the starting line. Two brothers from Canada, Francois and Charles Hamelin lined up next to America’s Ohno who had his eyes on another medal. The two Koreans were hoping to re-establish Korea as the world’s best in the short track and erase the memories of the recent chaotic crash.

With the starting signal the Hamelins blasted out with energetic speed. Ohno and the Koreans followed their lead. Strength and agility are important in any sport, and the native Canadians showed that they’ve got both. Physically they were far more superior. Every move they made on the ice was picturesque.

The waving arms looked toned and the thigh muscles on their consistently moving legs revealed clear definition. Like the wild Trojan horse, they were speeding towards the finish line. Every viewer of the sporting event had to doubt the Koreans, for the images of the two brothers represented what supreme conditioning of a professional athlete should look like.

With four laps to go, the land of the maple leaf had to bite its lips. The Koreans were getting ready to teach the world that strategy is essential in any sport. The Koreans came quickly from the outside. It was then when the Hamelins realized they pushed too hard too soon. In the final three laps the two Lees snatched the lead.

The Canadian crowd cheered desperately. All skaters started to show signs of fatigue. Muscles were aching and the blades were moving slower. It was a moment of truth for all the competitors as they fought to win a fraction of a second. Although the skaters were moving at incredible speeds, it seemed like time had paused in the Pacific Coliseum.

Setting an Olympic record with a time of 1:23.747 was Lee Jung-soo. Lee Ho-suk followed by finishing with 1:23.801. The glorious victory made up for the disappointment during the men’s 1500 meters where the podium sweep was turned to waters when Lee Ho-suk and Sung Si-bak crashed, costing themselves the silver and bronze medals behind Lee Jung-soo.

As for Ohno, he managed to cross the finishing line quick enough to win the bronze medal, becoming the most decorated American Winter Olympian in U.S. history. Korea’s tactic of staying behind of the race and charging ahead with full throttle at the end worked well, and they should be congratulated for distinguishing themselves as the world’s best in the sport.
