전 세계적으로 수업 시간에 계산기 사용의 유무에 대해 여전히 논쟁 중이다. 

실제로 여러 국가가 계산기를 수업 시간에 활용한다. 끊임없는 과학과 기술의 발달로 현재 또는 다가오는 미래에 이런 기술들을 학생들이 다룰 수 있고 연산이 아닌 문제의 이해도를 높인다는 것이다. 

그렇지 않은 국가도 있다. 계산기 사용을 반대하는 결정적인 이유로는 계산기를 사용하면 가장 기본이 되는 학생들의 수치 계산 또는 연산 실력을 쌓을 수 없게 한다는 점이다. 

미국, 호주, 뉴질랜드 등 국가들은 수업 시간에 계산기를 적극적으로 활용하는 국가들이다. 심지어 수학 교육 과정 중에 계산기 사용에 대한 과정도 있다. 단순히 사칙연산을 할 줄 아는 계산기와 달리 그래프까지 그려주는 그래픽 계산기도 사용할 줄 알아야 한다. 

물론 기본 연산을 배우는 초등학교 교실에는 계산기를 활용하지 않고 중고등학교부터 계산기를 사용하게 한다. 그리고 주어진 시간에만 사용해야 한다. 이는 학생들이 단순히 계산만 할 줄 아는 것이 아닌 계산기 없이 계산도 할 줄 알고 개념을 이해한 상태에서 쓰도록 하는 것이다. 이렇게 계산기를 사용함으로써 심화 문제들을 낼 수 있고 계산만 하는 것이 아닌 문제를 이해하고 어떻게 풀어 나아가는지에 대에 학생들이 더 생각을 할 수 있다는 것이다. 

미국 수학 문제들은 상대적으로 문장이 긴 걸 알 수 있다. 이는 학생들이 단순 계산이 아닌 정확하게 문제가 우리에게 원하는 것이 무엇인지 그 문제에 해석과 이해도에 초점을 맞춘 것이다. 심지어 미국 대학 입시 시험인 SAT는 여태까지 수학 부문에서 계산기를 쓰는 부분과 안 쓰는 부분이 나누어져 있었다. 

하지만 2024년부터 시작되는 새로운 SAT는 기존과 달리 온라인이고 모든 시험 부분이 디지털화됨으로써 수학 부문 전체에서 계산기를 허용할 수 있게 된다. 이렇게 된 결정적인 이유로는 미래 사회의 인공지능과 컴퓨터의 세계적인 추세로 알아볼 수 있다.

현재 계속해서 획기적이고 혁신적인 기술들이 만들어지고 인공지능과 컴퓨터들은 우리 상상 이상으로 발전해 나아가고 있다. 계산기도 마찬가지이다. 해마다 계산기가 더 똑똑해지고 더 빠르게 계산을 할 수 있고 심지어 현재에는 그래프 문제들도 풀 수 있다. 이젠 계산기를 비롯한 컴퓨팅 그리고 AI 영역까지 인간보다 계산 또한 수치나 데이터에 대한 해석과 풀이 등을 정확하고 빠르게 하는 것은 너무나도 당연한 사실이다. 

이 점들을 고려해 수업 시간에 계산기를 활용하는 몇몇 국가들은 단순히 계산할 줄 아는 인재가 아닌 문제를 잘 해석하고 이해하고 그에 따른 계산은 인공지능 혹은 즉 계산기가 하도록 컴퓨터와 인공지능들을 잘 다룰 수 있는 인재를 발굴하려는 의도로 보인다.

Innovating Calculators like AI

There are still lots of debates around the world about the usage of calculators in class whether should be allowed or banned. In fact, there are many countries that do not allow calculators in class, and some countries allow. One of the main reasons for some countries’ opposition to the use of calculator is that it makes hard for students to learn the most fundamental skills in math like numerical or computational skills. Meanwhile, some countries allow calculator in class because it is beneficial for students in the future. Since the science and technologies are constantly developing currently and it will continue in the future, allowing the calculators in class will enable students to deal with these technologies in the coming future, where science and technologies will get extremely advanced. Also, it will help students to focus more on the understanding and analyzing of the problems, not computations.

Countries such as United States, Australia, and New Zealand are the main countries that urge and actively use calculator during the class. There are even curriculums that teach students how to use calculators. Not just simply a calculator that can do simple calculations, they also teach students how to use graphing calculators and how to graph equations into those calculators. Calculator are banned in such environment that teach basic calculations, like in elementary schools, and allow to use it from junior high and high schools. Also, students are only allowed to use at given time. Sometimes teachers want students to solve problems without calculators. This allows students to focus on understanding the concept without using calculator at first so that way students can have more time to understand the problems. In fact, some of the questions are relatively in long sentences compared to the others. This makes students focus on the interpretation and understanding what exactly the problem wants, not calculations and most time the calculations are easy, but hard to comprehend the problem. The SAT, the U.S. exam for college, has divided into calculator and non-calculator sections. However, the new SAT is becoming online unlike before and from 2024, all the parts of the math sections will allow students to use calculators. The decisive reason for this is due to global trend of advancements of artificial intelligence and computers, including calculators, in the future society

Currently, innovative, and revolutionary technologies are continued to be created and modified, and artificial intelligence and computers are developing beyond our imagination. This goes same for the calculators. Calculators are keep evolving continuously that becomes smarter and able to calculate faster, and even now able to solve graphing problems. It is too obvious at present that calculators are more accurate and able to calculate and comprehend data way faster than humans. Due to the following observation and determinations of how fast it is getting advanced, countries that allow calculators in class are tempting to look for competent people, who can handle these technologies skillfully, such as artificial intelligence and computers. They don’t want people, who simply do calculations, but instead people who can comprehend the problems and able to use technologies expertly so that such following calculations can be done by calculators.
