미국 학생들은 한국과 같은 ‘독서실’이 없기 때문에 공부할 공공장소를 찾는다. 이러한 장소들은 무엇이며 미국 학생들의 학습을 형성하는 데 어떤 도움이 될까?

한국에서는 ‘독서실’이라고 불리는 공부 전용 공간을 찾는 것이 일반적이다. 종종 카페가 있는 이 객실은 밀폐된 책상이 특징이다. 장기간 집중할 수 있는 조용한 장소가 필요한 학생들이 자주 찾는 곳이다. 그러나 미국에서는 이러한 한적한 공간이 필요한 고등학생만을 위한 개인 스터디 공간을 찾기 어렵다. 많은 학생들이 숙제와 학교 관련 활동을 하기 위해 근처 도서관, 카페 또는 서점을 찾는다.

이러한 장소들은 학생들이 그룹 프로젝트에서 작업할 장소가 필요한 학생들 사이에 특히 인기가 있다. 열린 공간의 긍정적인 분위기는 학생들이 좋아하는 음료를 즐기면서 협력할 수 있도록 도와준다. 

그룹으로 일하지 않을 때도 미국 학생들은 개인 공부에 열심히 집중한다. 과외 및 학원들은 많은 곳에 널리 퍼져 있지만 많은 학생들이 Khan Academy 또는 출판된 워크북과 같은 온라인 자료를 사용하며 공부한다. 학원들은 수업 내용을 빠르게 마스터할 수 있는 이점이 있지만, 일부 학생들은 독립적으로 다른 자료를 통해 원하는 속도로 학습 내용을 소화하는 것을 선호한다. 이러한 경우 많은 학생들이 몇 시간 동안 학원에 머무르는 대신 혼자 학업에 집중하기 위해 도서관과 같은 공공장소에서 학습 환경을 찾는다.

특별히 공부 목적으로 만들어진 것은 아니지만 많은 공공장소는 학생들이 공부하기에 좋은 환경이다. 이러한 장소들은 그룹 작업에 적합할 뿐만 아니라 학교 커리큘럼을 충분히 공부하고 이해하는 데 도움을 준다.

Students living in the states find public areas to study as there are no “reading rooms” like Korea. What are these places and how do they help shape learning in American students? 

In Korea, it is common to find places that are designed specifically for studying, referred to as “reading rooms.” These rooms, which often come with a cafe, are characterized by sets of enclosed desks or cabinets. They are frequented by students, mostly in their high school years, who need quiet places for intense, prolonged focus. However, in the States, it is difficult to find private study areas devoted entirely to high school students in need of such secluded spaces. In turn, many seek local libraries, coffee shops, or bookstores to complete homework and perform school-related activities.

These places are particularly popular during the school year where students need places to work on group projects. The vibrant atmosphere of such open spaces seem to encourage students to work collaboratively while savoring their favorite drinks. They also include fast internet access and plenty of table space. 

When they are not working in groups, students in America focus on their individual studies just as diligently. While tutoring and private academies are prevalent in many areas, a great number of students use online resources like Khan Academy or independently published workbooks to review in-class material. Although private academies have the advantage of quickly mastering in-class material, some students prefer digesting the material at their desired pace through these listed independent resources. In these cases, many students turn to public study settings to focus on their work instead of staying in academies for hours.

Although they are not specifically made for studying purposes, many public spaces are a great environment for student studying. Not only do they encourage group work, but they also help absorb and process the breadth of knowledge school curriculums have to offer.
