미국의 많은 학생들은 여름방학 때 썸머캠프에 가곤 한다. 썸머캠프는 학생들이 시간적 여유가 있는 여름방학 때 관심있는 분야를 경험하고 깊이 있게 탐구할 수 있는 기회로, 대학에 가기 전 미리 그 분야에 대해 경험을 쌓을 수 있다. 그 분야의 전문가, 그리고 같은 분야에 관심이 있는 다른 학생들과 소통할 수 있으며 전공 적합성을 알아보거나 전공을 희망하는 분야에 대해 깊이 있는 지식을 얻을 수 있다. 종류가 다양해 스포츠, 의학, 과학, 수학, 문학, 사회 등 자신이 원하는 분야를 선택할 수 있다. 학업적 성장을 위해 개설되는 깊이 있는 강의 중점의 캠프가 있는 반면, 공동체 단위의 친목을 도모하는 형태의 캠프도 있는 등 캠프의 목적과 방향성 또한 다양하다. 

썸머캠프의 한 예시로서, 매년 여름 보스턴에서 열리는 Boston Leadership Institute (BLI)는 의학, 화학, 공학, 바이오, 테크, 컴퓨터과학, 경영, 심리학, 통계학 등 분야의 세분화된 1주 또는 3주 단위의 프로그램들을 제공한다. 가장 인기있는 생물 의학 & 외과 연구(Biomedical & Surgical Research) 프로그램에서는 동물 심장, 장기, 뇌 등의 해부실험 및 봉합을 체험하고 그와 관련한 의생물학적 지식을 배운다. 신경과학 리서치(Neuroscience Research) (3주) 프로그램을 하며 강의와 다양한 감각실험, 뇌 해부실험을 통해 깊이있는 지식을 배울 수 있었고, 신경과학과 관련한 세분화된 분야의 종류와 전공 적합성을 알아볼 수 있었다. 신경장애의 한 종류인 다중인격 장애 (Dissociative Identity Disorder·DID)를 주제로 그룹 프로젝트를 했으며, 기억과 관련한 실험을 설계하고 진행한 뒤 통계(상관관계)와 결론을 도출했다. 수업 이후 오후시간과 주말에는 대학 캠퍼스들, 쇼핑거리, 박물관, 바다 등 보스턴 도시 곳곳을 견학하며 친구들과 시간을 보냈다. 보스턴에 거주하는 학생들뿐 아니라 미국 서부, 유럽, 중앙아시아 등 여러 국가의 학생들이 한 캠프에 모였기에 다른 문화를 나눌 수 있는 좋은 기회가 됐다.

Many American students go to summer camp on their summer break. Summer camp is an opportunity for students to explore their fields of interest when they have free time. Students get to communicate with experts and other students with the same interest, as well as learn deep knowledge about fields they hope to major in and find their aptness in the fields. There are a variety of camps students can choose from- sports, medicine, science, mathematics, literature, social studies, and more. The vision of each camp varies; while some camps focus on lectures and learning knowledge, others encourage social engagement in a community. 

As an example, Boston Leadership Institute (BLI), which is held in Boston each summer, has one-week and three-week programs including chemistry, engineering, biology, technology, computer science, business, psychology, statistics, etc. The Biomedical & Surgical Research program, the most popular program in BLI, provides lectures and experience for sutures and dissections, including animal hearts, organs, brains, and more. In the Neuroscience Research program, a three-week length program, students learned in depth about neuroscience through a variety of perception demonstrations, brain dissection, and lectures, as well as exploring diverse subfields and finding the major aptitude. As a project,  they investigated a case study about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a type of neurological disorder, and also designed an experiment about memory, then conducted and analyzed them. After classes and on weekends, students went on field trips to places in Boston, including college campuses, shopping areas, historical sites, a beach, and museums. As students were from all over the world, from Boston to Europe and middle Asia, it was a good opportunity to share different cultures.
