In Korea, the fifth day of April is Arbor Day, known as Sikmogil in Korean. It was considered a public holiday until 2005 but not anymore, because the government introduced the five-day work week from July 2006 to reduce work pressure. However, people still celebrate this day by planting trees and flowers with their families and friends as it is usually the best of the season to plant them. Also, the government holds a national campaign on this day to plant many trees across the nation.

Korea is one of the countries in the world that is suffering from       pollution, greenhouse gas and climate change. Therefore, Arbor Day becomes more important at this period of time to combat those environmental disasters.

식목일  
 
식목일은 제이 스털링 몰튼 (J. Sterling Morton)이 미국 네브래스카 주에서 창시했다. 그는 나무를 심어 자연을 되돌아보는 계기를 만들기 위해 식목일을 만들었다. 처음으로 식목일이 기념되기 시작한 1872년 4월 10일, 미국에서는 약 100만 그루의 나무가 심어졌다. 식목일은 미국 외에도 한국을 비롯한 여러 나라에서 기념하고 있다.

한국의 식목일은 4월 5일이다. 2005년도 까지만 해도 식목일은 공휴일이었지만 2006년 7월을 기점으로 공식적인 주 5일 근무제가 시행됨에 따라 식목일은 공휴일에서 제외됐다. 그러나 사람들은 변함없이 친구들 또는 가족과 함께 나무와 꽃을 심으며 식목일을 기념한다. 바로 이 날이 1년 중 나무를 심기에 최적이기 때문이다.

또한 정부에서도 식목일에 국가적 행사를 개최해 전국에 수 많은 그루의 나무를 심는다.

한국은 공해, 온실가스, 기후변화의 폐해에 노출되어 있는 국가 중 하나이다. 이러한 시기에 환경적 재난에 대한 효과적인 대비책으로 식목일의 중요성이 더욱 대두되고 있다.
