Spider silk is also very smart. It reacts differently to light and strong pressure. If a light wind blows on a spider web, the silk strands become soft and elastic. The web stretches instead of breaking. If you try to poke your finger through a strand, however, the silk will tighten and break. This is to protect the rest of the web. Only the part where you poked the web will break.

In the future, many things will be made using spider silk, like water bottles, bandages and even paper. However, that is still a long way off, because even today, scientists do not fully understand the secrets of spider silk.

강철보다 강한 거미줄  
 
거미줄은 인간에게 알려진 물질 중 가장 강하고 튼튼하다. 강철보다 5배 강하고 방탄조끼 제조에 사용되는 케블러 만큼이나 튼튼하다. 그러나 거미줄은 머리카락 한 올보다 얇으며 고무줄 보다 뛰어난 탄력성을 가졌다.

거미줄은 스마트하기까지 하다. 압력의 강약에 따라 거미줄은 다르게 반응한다. 약한 바람이 거미줄에 분다 하더라도 거미줄은 끊어지지 않도록 탄력성이 생기며 늘어난다. 하지만 거미줄 일부분을 손가락으로 찌르면 거미줄은 팽팽해지면서 끊어진다. 손가락으로 찌른 부분만 끊어지면서 거미줄 다른 부위에 피해를 최소화하는 방법이다.

앞으로는 물병, 붕대 심지어 종이와 같은 많은 제품들은 거미줄을 이용하여 만들어질 예정이다. 하지만 아직도 과학자들은 거미줄의 비밀을 다 파헤치지 못했기 때문에 거미줄 연구가 갈 길은 앞으로도 멀다.
