You will be surprised to know that the world’s tallest flower smells like a dead body. The flower, Titan Arum, is also known as the corpse flower because it has a disgusting odor. The dark red giant flower uses the smell to attract insects for pollination. Titan Arum normally grows in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra. Even there, it has always been uncommon.

The uncommon flower can grow over three meters tall. However, it is hard to know when the plant blooms. It usually takes several years for the Titan Arum to save enough energy to bloom. The blooming usually lasts for three days only.

Titan Arum is unique and strangely wonderful. It is one of nature’s true wonders. So, you will be lucky to see the flower in person only if you can bear the terrible smell.

꽃이 피면 무슨 향이 날까? 꽃은 좋은 향기를 풍긴다. 그러나 모든 꽃의 향기가 다 좋기만 한 건 아니다.

세계에서 가장 큰 꽃에서 시체 썩는 냄새가 난다면 놀랄 수 밖에 없다. ‘타이탄 아룸’이라 불리는 이 꽃은 향기가 고약해 시체 꽃 이라고도 불린다. 진한 적색을 띠는 어마어마한 크기의 꽃은 악취로 곤충을 유혹해 수분작용을 한다. 이 꽃은 수마트라 섬, 열대 우림 지역에서 주로 서식한다. 그러나 그곳에서도 ‘타이탄 아룸’은 흔하게 볼 수 있는 식물이 아니다.

이 귀한 꽃은 키가 3미터까지 자란다. 그러나 정작 언제 식물이 꽃을 피울지는 알 수 없다. ‘타이탄 아룸’은 보통 수년에 걸쳐 에너지를 저장하고 그 에너지로 꽃을 피우기 때문이다. 꽃은 삼일 정도 만개한다.

‘타이탄 아룸’은 독특하고 이상한 경이로움이다. 진정한 자연의 경이 중 하나로 직접 눈으로 꽃을 볼 수만 있다면 엄청난 행운이 아닐 수 없다. 그러나 그러기 위해서는 역겨운 냄새를 참아내야 한다.
