During summer time, there is daylight saving time or DST.

When summer time starts, the clock moves ahead one hour, and when summer time ends, the clock falls back one hour. Around 70 countries in the world have adopted daylight savings time. There are some people, who are urging the Korean government to adopt daylight saving time; however, Korea does not observe daylight saving time currently.

Daylight saving time has two main purposes. It is to increase daytime hours and to save energy consumption. Daylight saving is a change in the standard time with the purpose of getting better use of daylight. The sun rises one hour earlier in the morning and sets one hour later in the evening.

For most Americans, daylight saving time this year started at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. It will go back to standard-time on Sunday, November 4, 2012. This is the end of daylight saving time this year. In Australia, daylight saving time started on Sunday, October 7, and in New Zealand, it started one week earlier on Sunday, September 30.

전세계 일광절약 시간  
 
일광절약시간제는 여름에 시행된다.

여름이 시작되면 지역시간을 원래 시간대의 시간보다 한 시간 앞당기고 여름이 끝나면 다시 원래 시간으로 1시간 되돌리는 것이다. 전세계 국가 중 약70개국에서 일광절약시간제를 도입했다. 일부에서는 한국 정부에 일광절약시간제 도입을 촉구하고 있지만 현재 한국은 해당 제도를 사용하지 않고 있다.

일광절약시간제 사용에는 두 가지 목적이 있다. 낮 시간을 늘리고 에너지 소비를 최소화하는 것이다. 지역시간을 변경해 낮 시간의 효율적인 사용을 도모하는 것이다. 여름에는 일출시간이 한 시간 빠르고 일몰시간이 한 시간 느려지기 때문이다.

올해 3월 11일 일요일 오전 2시에 미국 대부분의 주에서 일광절약시간제가 시작됐다. 다가오는 11월 4일 일요일에 다시 원래 시간으로 되돌려진다. 이것으로 올해 미국의 일광절약시간제는 종료된다. 한편, 호주의 일광절약시간제는 10월 7일 일요일에 시작됐고 뉴질랜드는 그보다 일주일 앞선 9월 30일 일요일에 시행됐다.
