Rabbits have red eyes because of a condition called albinism. Albinism is a condition where the body is unable to make a chemical called melanin. Melanin gives our skin, hair, and eyes their color. Albinism occurs in humans and plants as well as animals. 

The first sign that a rabbit may have albinism is its white fur. However, not all white rabbits have albinism. To be a true albino, the rabbit needs to have both white fur and red or pink eyes.

So why do albino rabbits have red eyes? The red color actually comes from the blood vessels in the eyes. The eyes usually have a ring of color around the pupil, called the iris. However, albino rabbits have no color in their irises. This allows the red color of the blood vessels to show through the eye.

Albino rabbits are no different than other rabbits. They do, however, have poor eyesight. Albino rabbits are also sensitive to light, so make sure they have plenty of shaded areas they can shelter under.

왜 토끼 눈은 빨간색일까?  
 
토끼들은 선천성 색소결핍증 때문에 눈이 빨간색이다. 선천성 색소결핍증은 몸에서 멜라닌이라는 화학물질을 만들지 못하는 질환이다. 멜라닌은 피부, 머리카락 그리고 눈의 색깔을 결정하는 색소이다. 선천성 색소결핍증은 동물 외에도 사람과 식물도 앓을 수 있는 질환이다.

토끼의 흰 털은 선천성 색소결핍증의 한 증세이다. 하지만 모든 하얀 토끼들이 선천성 색소결핍증을 앓고 있는 것은 아니다. 진정한 알비노는 흰 털도 가졌으며 눈 또한 빨간색 혹은 분홍색이어야 한다.

그러면 알비노 토끼의 눈은 왜 빨간 색일까? 사실 눈에 있는 혈관이 빨간색이라 눈도 빨간 것이다. 동공을 둘러싸는 둥근 띠를 홍채라고 한다. 알비노 토끼의 홍채는 색이 없다. 그래서 빨간 혈관이 눈 바깥까지 비춰지는 것이다.

알비노 토끼들은 다른 토끼와 다를 바가 없다. 단 시력이 안 좋다. 알비노 토끼는 빛에 민감하며 빛을 피할 수 있는 그늘진 공간이 필요하다.
