Nationwide, the fields and mountains have blossomed green; full of refreshing fragrance. We can enjoy the scented greenery to the utmost today thanks to the sacrifices of our patriotic forefathers who devoted their lives to our country. Every June, the smell of incense suffuses the nation as people stop and take a moment to cherish the memories of our forefathers.

In Daeyeondong Namgu, Busan, the UNMCK (United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea) has become a place of worship. Here, many of the fallen soldiers of the UN who gave their lives to protect our country’s freedom and peace during the Korean War lie buried. The sacred ground is designated as the only one of its kind in the world dedicated to the UN soldiers. Numerous UN soldiers - many of them who knew little about our country- gave their lives protecting the democracy of Korea.

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War broke out. The UN dispatched the UN Forces composed of a total of 21 countries (16 countries supporting battles and 5 countries supporting medicine). During the war, 40,896 UN soldiers died. The ashes of about 11,000 soldiers were buried in this cemetery but later, several of these ashes were transferred to their own respective countries. Now, the ashes of about 2,300 bodies of 11 countries are buried in the cemetery.

I visited this cemetery to participate in the 56th annual Memorial Day and to meet foreign visitors. It was a beautiful and peaceful cemetery with roses and royal azaleas between the graveyards. The notes of yearning left by families who visited this place made my heart ache. One of the park’s staff said “Some families came to bring back the ashes of the soldier, but then saw the beauty of the cemetery and changing their minds, left the ashes and expressed their gratitude.”

Here, there are many beautiful stories from amongst the wonderful visitors. A widow of an Australian soldier, who participated in the Korean War right after their marriage, provided medical services for 60 years, and in keeping with her wishes, was buried near her husband. Another widow from Turkey wanted to have some soil from her husband’s grave. The youngest soldier buried in the cemetery was an Australian who had joined the army on behalf of his older brother when he was 17 years old; which is younger than my age.

Miss Marie, a Canadian, who is teaching English in Seoul, said that “Since I was young, I have heard that my grandfather rests in peace here. Today, I visited here to pray for the repose of his soul, and I feel relieved at the good management of the cemetery. In addition, it is good thing [to know that] he is still alive in the hearts of Koreans.”

After the APEC summit held in Busan in 2005, this UN cemetery was formed as a peace park. As the name of the region of this cemetery, ‘Busan Namgu Special Peace and Culture Zone for the United Nations’, was approved by the UN in 2010, Busan will be born again as a place that symbolizes world peace.

The UNMCK attracts international interest as a global cultural heritage site. It is also a diplomatic park that can lay the foundation for international friendships, as well as properly recognize the countries that participated in the war. Finally, it is also an important place to educate future generations of the miseries of war and the importance of peace.

한국의 유엔기념공원

전국의 밭과 산이 푸른 꽃들로 만발했다; 상쾌하게 하는 향기가 가득한. 우리는 우리 나라를 위해 목숨을 바치신 애국적인 조상들의 희생 덕분에 오늘날 상당히 향기로운 화초를 즐길 수 있다. 6월마다 사람들이 멈춰 우리 조상들을 잠시나마 기릴 때 향 냄새가 온 세상에 퍼진다.

부산 대영동 남구에 위치한 유엔기념공원은 숭배의 장소가 되었다. 이 곳에는 한국 전쟁 동안 우리 나라의 자유와 평화를 보호하기 위해 목숨을 바친 유엔군의 전사한 많은 군인들이 묻혀 있다. 그 신성한 땅은 유엔 군인들에게 바친 세계에서 한 곳으로 지정되었다. 우리 나라에 대해 거의 알지 못하는 사람들인 대부분인 수많은 유엔군들은 한국의 민주주의를 보호하다가 그들의 일생을 바쳤다.

1950년 6월 25일, 한국 전쟁이 발발했다. 유엔은 총 21개국(전투를 지원하는 16개국과 약을 지원하는 5개국)으로 구성된 유엔군을 파견했다. 그 전쟁 동안, 40,896명의 유엔군들이 죽었다. 11,000명의 군인들의 유골들이 이 묘지에 묻혀졌지만 후에, 몇몇 유골들은 그들만의 각 나라로 이송되었다. 현재, 11개국의 2,300명의 유골들이 그 묘지에 묻혀 있다.

서울에서 영어를 가르치고 있는 캐나다 사람 마리씨가 말하기를 “어렸을 때, 저는 우리 할아버지가 이 곳에서 편히 잠들었다는 것을 들은 적이 있습니다. 오늘, 저는 할아버지의 영혼의 휴식을 기도하러 이 곳을 방문했고 묘지를 잘 관리해주신 덕분인지 안도감을 느꼈습니다. 게다가, 그가 한국인들의 가슴 속에 여전히 살아 있다는 것을 알게 되어 기분이 좋습니다.”

APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상회담이 2005년에 부산에서 열린 이후, 이 유엔 묘지는 평화 공원으로 구성된다. 이 묘지의 지역의 이름으로서, ‘부산 남구 유엔 평화 문화 특구’는 2010년에 유엔에 의해 승인 받았고, 부산은 세계 평화를 상징하는 장소로 다시 태어날 것이다.
