The first big match for South Korea’s footballers after the departure of two veteran footballers - Park Ji-sung of Manchester United and Lee Young-pyo of Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal was not against an easy team. The national team had a big chunk of its heart removed after the retirement of Korea’s two finest players from international play after finishing third at the Asian Cup last month.

The Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium in the Turkish port city of Trabzon was where the South Koreans had to face its favored Dutchman hero and teacher, Guus Hiddink. Now leading the Turkey team, the man responsible for leading the South Korean team to the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup was waiting to face his old ally.

To make up for the positions of Park and Lee, and Lee Chung-yong of Bolton Wanderers and the all mighty Cha Du-ri of Celtic FC, young players had to step up. For the new generation replacing the old, the absence of big four players did not bring much comfort. Luckily, they managed not to lose control of the game. As matter of fact, they ran a pretty decent game.

South Korea struggled to stifle Turkey’s aggressive attack throughout the game and failed to create many scoring opportunities. For instance, in the 11th minute, Hamit Alintop fired a strong long-range shot that came as a threat. However, South Korean goalie Jung Sung-ryong managed to make the save. In the second half, an opportunity came for South Korea when Emre Belozoglu got two consecutive yellow cards in two minutes. Sadly, the Red Devils were not able to capitalize on the numerical advantage even with the absence of Turkish captain on the field.

The head to head match was challenging as expected. South Korea was able to end the game in a draw, and the record against Turkey improved to one win, two draws and four loses. Turkey’s boss Hiddink said after the game that his former team needs to produce star players like Park Ji-sung in order to make strong presence on the international football stage. The message is indeed true. It was Hiddink who recognized the talent of Park and Lee, and moved them to his next club PSV Einthoven of the Netherlands to help them advance to the English Premier League.

The Dutch coach told the Korean media that the current Korean players are physically fit and well organized with much passion as the players in 2002. He added that amongst them new superstars that control the game and lead others must appear on the field. During a short meeting with the Korean press Hiddink sent the following message for his Korean fans, “When two or three footballers join prominent European clubs, South Korea will definitely see quick improvement and turn into one of the most competitive teams in the world.”
