Many young people download music, both legally and illegally and there are many ethical issues at play, especially for illegal downloads. So, where did this process called “downloading” get started? It was in the U.S. Now music companies in America are bringing a law suit against a man name Mark Gorton who invented a download service called LimeWire.

Mr. Gorton is a very smart person and is always trying out new ideas, such as promoting green transport in his home of New York City. He created the LimeWire service as a way to help share music with people all over the world and hoped that people in the music industry would help him create a paid subscription service for downloading music, much like iTunes or other such programs.

However, millions of people all over the world used the LimeWire program to download music illegally and now record companies want to fine Gorton some heavy bucks. Just how much are we talking about? Well, the figure is astronomical. It could be up to $450 million for copyright infringement.

LimeWire is a free program that allows ‘peer to peer’ file sharing, where users share the files on their computers with others and take files from their computers also. Over the years record companies have been getting more and more distraught over this and brought many businesses and individuals to court over illegal downloads. The companies say they are losing lots of money because of programs like LimeWire.

Gorton claimed he didn’t know he was breaking the law and didn’t expect a law suit to be placed against him. Yet this is not the first time that record companies have brought lawsuits against illegal download services, with other companies such a Napster and the Pirate Bay being taken to court.

It is now unclear what Gorton will do about the lawsuit and his company. “If I knew what I know now about the music industry, maybe we would have done something different”, Gorton said, suggesting that maybe he regrets what he has done.
