When speaking of the imagination, one can come up with a long list of well-known authors in the world. Surely, that list will include the name ‘Bernard Werber’. Just last month his most recent release hit the shelves in book stores; “Paradise sur mesure”.

This French writer Bernard Werber, who has a solid fan base here in Korea, is often labeled as “the author of the imagination”. With the craze over his epic novel ‘God’ still lingering Bernard has again saddled up to thrill his fans with a series of novelettes. The book Paradise 1, 2 consist of seventeen short stories, which can be categorized into two parts-‘the future’ and ‘the past’.

The stories of the future are quite intriguing since they deal with the future of human beings and society. For example a future society where people are sentenced to death because of an act that destroys nature or a world where only women could survive - according to Bernard’s theory of evolution- and men remain as a legend. The stories may come across as absurd, yet they are based on Bernard’s own great scientific knowledge.

For the first time Bernard has written about his own past in his book. The majority of the out-of-this-world stories categorized in the past are basically based on his experiences. He reveals the reason why he wrote about his past in the prologue, saying, “I didn’t want to forget what happened to me. The more I think about the future, the more I feel like my past vanishes.”

Seemingly the stories are separated but in the big picture, they are under the one theme ‘of observing human beings’. Therefore can the book be considered as one story. In addition, there’s a special feature in the Korean edition. Five promising Korean illustrators took part in drawing illustrations for the stories, which you can encounter as you flip the pages.

The word ‘Paradise’ literally means the place one dreams of. Under the title Paradise, Bernard has set up a paradise filled with his own imagination. While reading Bernard’s various short stories, I could find that he is a person with a great deal of curiosity. I guess his endless curiosity is what triggered him to write these stories in the first place.

So why don’t you take your eyes away from those heavy text books and take some time to explore the world of the imagination? It will help stimulate other parts of your brain and these books are definitely worth curling up with.

상상의 세계로 빠져보자

상상에 대해 이야기 할 때면, 사람들은 세계의 유명한 많은 작가들을 떠올릴 수 있을 것이다. 확실히, 그 리스트는 “베르나르 베르베르”를 포함 할 것이다. 지난달 그의 가장 최근작인 “파라다이스”가 서점에 출시되었다.
