Countless marines are on mini-boats searching for missing sailors near the maritime border in the West Sea. Last week, a 1,200-ton patrol ship known as the Cheonan exploded approximately 1.8 kilometers from the nation’s northernmost island of Baengnyeong. Only 58 of the 104 crew members have been rescued. The other 46 are still missing.

The explosion occurred in the middle of the night. The government and the Ministry of Defense 국방부 are still unable to announce the cause of the explosion. Cheong Wa Dae had previously thought that North Korea was involved in the ship wreck. 46 sailors remain missing in action.

Defense Minister Kim Tae-young announced during the recent National Assembly regarding the cause of the incident that it may be possible that the vessel hit a sea mine laid by North Korean ships. If so, were the mines placed by the North intentionally? Or did they drift into the nation’s waters? The Defense Minister refused to comment.

What we do know is that nearly 4,000 mines were purchased by North Korea during the Korean War, and 3,000 of them have been laid in the waters off the Korean Peninsula. When the war ended in a truce, most of the mines were collected. However both nations deployed floating and submerged mines dear the de facto sea border.

The North is claiming that no torpedoes of any kind were fired at the Korean vessel. Taking this into account, there is a high probability that a mine may have caused the tragedy. According to military experts an acoustic mine may have blown up near the vessel since it could be activated by the noise of passing ships.

In a joint rescue operation with the U.S., nearly 100 sea divers have searched underwater to successfully reach the stern. After tying a loop of rope around its deck, it was pulled up from 40 meters underwater. Unfortunately no sailors were found in the hull.

President Lee Myung-bak called for all manpower and equipment to be utilized in the speeding up of the rescue operation. Despite the time ticking and hopes diminishing, the President stressed to the navy and rescuers that no one should give up hope for more survivors. On the other hand, the Defense Minister told the press that the possibility of more survivors is low given the amount of time that has passed since the accident.

While the cause of the explosion is still unclear, a 3,000-ton U.S. rescue fleet and 20 South Korean vessels, including two minesweepers, are working day and night to reach possible survivors. Civilian divers and navy salvage specialists have also joined the rescue efforts. Let’s pray and hope to find more survivors.

실종된 해병대원들을 위한 수색 작업

폭발의 원인이 아직 불명확한 반면, 두 척의 소해정을 포함해, 3천 톤의 미국 구조 함대와 20 척의 남한 선박들이 생존자들을 위해 밤낮을 가리지 않고 일하고 있다. 민간인 잠수부들과 해군 구조 전문가들도 구조 노력에 함께 참여하고 있다.
