오늘 필자는 미국 기숙 고등학교 중 Arts Boarding School (한국의 예술학교) 및 고등학생들이 참여 할 수 있는 아트에 관련한 여름 프로그램을 소개하려고 한다. 아트 기숙 고등학교는 다른 일반 고등학교와는 달리 학생들이 미술이나 음악에 집중적으로 시간을 더 많이 투자할 수 있고 학교에서 개인의 예술적 재능을 살릴 수 있는 기회를 더 많이 준다. 그러므로 예술 쪽에 관심이 많고 예술 대학을 가고 싶은 학생들은 예술 고등학교를 지원하는 것도 좋은 방법이다.

하지만 예술 고등학교를 가야만 예술을 할 수 있는 것은 절대 아니다. 일반 기숙 고등학교를 가도 미술이나 음악을 할 수 있고 학생의 예술적인 측면을 살려서 대학을 갈수 있다. 실제로 많은 학생들이 예술 학교가 아닌 미국 사립 고등학교를 다니면서 학업과 함께 학교에서 제공하는 음악이나 미술프로그램을 참여한다. 예를 들어 학생이 노래에 소질이 있다면 아카펠라나 코러스 그룹 또는 뮤지컬이 있는 학교를 찾아보고 음악에 관심이 있다면 오케스트라 프로그램이나 재즈 프로그램이 있는 학교를 찾아봐야 한다. 또한 학교에서 프로그램을 제공하지 않아도 개인 레슨을 받을 수 있는 학교들이 있기 때문에 이 또한 학교에 지원하기 전에 확인해봐야 한다.

만약 학교 외에서도 음악이나 미술 프로그램을 참여하고 싶다면 여름방학 때 대학교에서 고등학생들을 위해 제공하는 프로그램을 참여함으로써 자신의 재능을 개발하는 것도 좋은 방법이다. 또한 음악을 하는 학생이라면 각 주마다 All-State Orchestra와 All-state Band 오디션이 매년 열리므로 오디션을 준비해서 학기 중에도 학교 외의 음악 프로그램에 참여 할 수 있다.

예술 쪽으로 관심이 있는 학생이고 특히 스포츠보단 예술 쪽으로 소질을 가지고 있는 학생이라면 고등학교 리스트를 정할 때 좋은 고등학교 순이 아니라 고등학교에서 자신의 재능을 더 발전시킬 수 있는 곳을 선택해야 한다. 그래야만 고등학교를 가서도 자신의 취미나 특기를 개발할 수 있는 시간을 가질 수 있고 대학을 지원할 때 Extracurricular activities(학교 외 활동)에 자신이 참여했던 프로그램을 기입하여 한번 더 어필할 수 있다.
