안녕하세요, 오늘은 2주전 소개 드렸던 영화 Ivory Tower에서 언급했던 온라인 강좌에 대해 쓰려 합니다. 영화 속에서 나왔던 Coursera, Udacity, Edx 중에 아들이 수강했던 것은 Coursera입니다. 과목은 Calculus 1였고 기간은 10주였습니다.

미국의 수학교육은 월반이 가능합니다. 능력껏 2년 또는 3년까지 월반하는 친구들이 있습니다. 아시안 학생들은 사실 한 학년 정도는 월반을 많이 합니다. 아들도 8학년 때 한 학년 앞서 Geometry를 들었는데 어쩐 일인지 고등학교를 가서도 9학년 수학이 또 Geometry였습니다. 아들은 학교측에 월반이 가능한 지 물었고 대답은 불가능하다는 것이었습니다.  이유는 모르겠지만 아들의 학교는 과목 선택이 자유롭지 않습니다.대부분 같은 커리큘럼으로 4년을 보내게 되어 있습니다.

아들은 수학을 전공으로 택하고 싶어할 만큼 수학을 좋아합니다. 때문에 학교수업만으론 만족하지 않았고 다른 방법을 찾기 시작했습니다. 처음엔 이것저것 문제집을 주문하고 Khan Academy같은 온라인 학습을 시작하더니 학원도 다니고 싶다고 해 보내줬습니다. 학교가 바빠지니 이것도 여의치 않아 고민을 하던 참에 남편이 제안한 MOOC프로그램을 열심히 알아보더니 Coursera에서 Calculus1을 신청했습니다.

수강경험을 정리하면 다음과 같습니다.  일단 각 챕터별로 여러 개의 비디오가 있습니다. 각 비디오는 4분에서 7분짜리로 생각보다 빠른 속도로 진행됩니다. 아들은 처음에 당황하더니 같은 비디오를 서너 번 반복 수강하였습니다. 이런 식으로 한 비디오를 소화하는데 30분 정도가 걸렸답니다. 무엇보다도 한 챕터를 마치기 위해서는 시험을 봐야 하는데 그러려면 챕터별로 16개의 비디오를 일주일 동안 끝내야 했답니다. 중간중간 연습문제와 퀴즈도 풀어야 했답니다. 첫 챕터 시험에서 아들은 70점을 받고 약간의 충격을 받았답니다.

이 때 아들이 느낀 것은 온라인 강의는 처음부터 끝까지 스스로 조절해야 하는 수업이고 수업자체도 학생위주가 아니라는 사실이었습니다. 더불어 대부분의 대학강의가 실제로도 본인이 알아서 해나가야 한다는 걸 알고는 긴장을 늦추지 않고 10주를 열심히 공부해 나갔습니다.  그 결과로 아들은 마지막 시험에서 97점을 받았습니다. 하지만 아들은 본인 점수를 믿지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 온라인 강의만으로는 본인 스스로 만족할 만큼 배우지 못했고 이해도 다하지 못했기 때문이랍니다.

아들은 온라인 수업의 한계를 인정하면서도 개념이나 전체적인 감을 익히는 데는 온라인 수업이 의미 있다고 합니다. 그렇지만 역시 교육은 사람과 사람 사이의 교감이 중요하다며 첫 번째 교육방법은 될 수 없다고 합니다. 어쩔 수 없이 온라인 수강을 하게 될 우리 아이들, 어떻게 On & Off수업을  적절히 이용할 지 지켜봐야겠습니다.

The following article is about my experience of taking online course on Coursera, one of the MOOC programs available in the United States.

I usually don’t complain about my high school. However, if I have to say one complaint about my high school, it would be its restricted math curriculum. Unlike other public high schools, the high school that I attend does not give chance to students to take higher math classes. All students must take math classes for their respective grade levels. Due to the curriculum, I had to take geometry last year, which is unreasonable because I had already taken geometry in past. I have asked my math teacher to advance me to higher math class. Unfortunately, I have failed to do so multiple times. As a result, I tried to find a way to take calculus outside the school. I looked up online for online courses for calculus, yet all the websites I found demanded the tuition cost.

Then, my dad suggested me to look up a website called Coursera, a MOOC program, which provided free calculus class. At first, I was very skeptical about Coursera because I wasn’t sure if I could trust my information to a website that provides free online courses. However, I realized that there was no time to doubt, so I immediately signed up a calculus class in Coursera.

The first time I looked into the website, there were groups of videos for each chapter. Each video consisted of lessons in its respective chapter. I opened up the video, and this math professor lectured about limits for seven minutes straight. At first, I couldn’t keep up with the professor’s pace, so I had to pause and rewind multiple times. In the end, it took me about 30 minutes to complete one video. After I looked at the first video, I found that there were tabs on the website for practice problems, quizzes, and open forum for each chapter. And I found out that the first quiz was due in one week. That meant that I had to finish sixteen videos in one week, do some practice problems, and take the quiz. I was worried that I couldn’t complete the videos on time and get a good score on quiz. As a result, on the first chapter, I only completed 10 videos and I got 7/10 on the first quiz.

I was very disappointed on my first progress. I thought that the course was very inefficient for the students. The course was self-paced, therefore not user-friendly. Then, I realized that college courses are almost like the online course that I took. So I told myself that I’m training myself for college, and I continued to take the class. As the time past, my scores started to improve, and I was able to watch more videos within one week. After ten weeks of rigorous studying, I got 97% on the calculus course! I felt so satisfied for the score, but I thought that I was rushing myself throughout the weeks, barely getting any time to completely understand the concepts in calculus. In the end, I learned that though students could find other alternative for education, nothing could be better than human to human communication.
