안녕하세요. 오늘은 가벼운 주제로 좀 지난 딸의 생일이야기를 하려 합니다. 미국 와서 보니 한국에서 애들 생일날 받았던 답례선물, 초대장 참석여부 문화 이런 것들이 참 많이 비슷하다는 생각을 했습니다. 요즘은 주로evite란 사이트를 통해 이메일로 초대장이 전해집니다. 참석여부는 물론 참석자까지 다 알 수 있는 훌륭한 사이트죠. 중학교를 들어가고 나서는 애들이 바빠져서 인지 생일규모도 작아지고 조용히 지나가는 경우도 많습니다. 그래서 많이 하는 것이 바로   ‘Birthday Locker’입니다.

생일날 아침 일찍 친구들이 모여 사물함 안에 사탕이랑 작은 선물, 카드 등을 넣어놓고 사물함 문에 각종 장식을 꾸며 놓습니다. 그리고 생일인 친구가 오면 생일 노래를 불러주고 축하한다는 말을 전합니다. 점심시간에는 생일인 친구가 가져온 간식을 나눠 먹습니다.

사실 이게 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 전날 밤부터 카드는 직접 그려서 만들어야 하고 사탕 목걸이도 만들고 새벽에 마켓에 가서 풍선도 사야 합니다. 무엇보다 친구가 오기 전에 꾸며야 하니 학교도 다른 날보다 30분 이상 일찍 가야 합니다. 한마디로 시간, 정성, 돈이 모두 필요한 일이랍니다.

올해 딸의 생일날도 친구들이 아침7시부터 모여서 아기자기하게 꾸며 놓았답니다. 주로 친한 친구 두 세 명 계획하에 이뤄지는데 생일인 친구는 전날 사물함을 열어놓고 다른 날보다 좀 늦게 가는 게 예의랍니다. 또한 ‘Birthday Locker’는 거의 다 품앗이 형태이므로 본인 생일을 챙겨준 친구 생일에는 잊지 않고 서로 꾸며주는 것이 당연지사입니다. 개인주의가 기본인 이 곳, 한국식 ‘정’을 기대하긴 어렵지만 이런 소소한 것들이 관계를 이어가는 방법인가 봅니다. 아래는 딸이 정리한 글입니다.

A month ago, it was my birthday and my friends decorated my locker in school. In America, at least where I live, my friends and I have a tradition of decorating each other’s locker on our birthdays. We often put candies and little presents in the locker. Another thing we do on birthdays is we wait for birthday girl to arrive to school and greet her with a birthday song when she arrives. Later in the day, during lunch, the birthday girl usually has a treat to share with the lunch group and we celebrate her birthday once again.

Although it is a very pleasant surprise on birthday, it takes up a lot of time and commitment. Most of the friends who are decorating the locker really go all out and make it extravagant. To make it big and fancy, they often make the panels and the decorations for the locker by themselves, which takes a long time from experience. Along with that, they usually spend some money on the birthday girl’s presents, candies, or decorations. Also, the friends have to wake up early to decorate the locker in the morning so it is all decorated by the time they get to school.

This year, a lot of my friends participated in decorating my locker and it was really fancy. They decorated the locker with tissue paper, balloons, birthday signs, ribbons, and many other components. On the inside, they decorated it with ribbons, candies, and presents. Here are some pictures.
