In September of 2012, 14 year-old Marcos Ugarte was returning home from football practice when he and his father noticed an orange glow from a neighbor’s house. Although the two initially brushed it off as the sunset, they soon heard screaming and immediately knew that they needed to help. By the time they had arrived at the scene of the fire, all but an eight-year-old boy of the Ma family named Cody had escaped; Cody had locked himself in his room and was unable to get out. Instinctively taken over by adrenaline, Marcos “took the ladder… propped it up… crawled up the window… punched the screen out” and carried the boy down to safety (ABC News). 

 Previous to this display of selflessness and heroism, Marcos wouldn’t have appeared different much from any other high school boy. As an ordinary teen who enjoyed football and expressed pride in the football team of his state, the Oregon Ducks, he had never known how the event would influence the course of his own life. Following the event, in an interview with OPB, Marcos expressed his appreciation for life, stating the importance of “just realizing what you have before it’s gone, because life can end any second of the day.” In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, he also mentioned how he nurtured the aspirations of becoming a firefighter. He received the citizen award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society as the first person under 18.

Although the kindness and bravery shown by Marcos haven’t had a global impact, they have greatly affected his hometown, especially the Ma family.
Through all the praise and part-time fame, Marcos remained humble: "I can't say I really consider myself a hero. I think anyone would have done what I did.”
