The recent rise of the anti-gun control protest in America is an unprecedented remarkable event in that it was triggered and has been mainly organized by no other than the schoolmates of the teenage victims. And at the center of the movement firmly stands Emma Gonzalez, whose heroic speeches have moved the heart of the nation desperate for the change to the anachronistic Wild-West adaptation of the Second Amendment.

 Prior to the shooting, the cheerful life of Emma had been anything but politics or steely determination. Born in 2000 to Beth Gonzalez, a math tutor, and Jose Gonzalez, a cybersecurity attorney immigrated from Cuba, she was raised in Parkland, Florida with her two brothers. As a senior attending Stoneman Douglas High School, she enjoyed creative writing and astronomy, while mathematics being her least favorite subject. Gonzalez played an active role as the president of the school’s gay-straight alliance and lead the school project aimed at sending a weather balloon “to the edge of space.” Outside of school, Gonzalez attested to watching a lot of Netflix movies; in an interview with The New Yorker she mentioned that she had spent a whole summer watching movies and having conversations with her family that were “just movie quotes.” She also mentioned her interests in fashion, clothing modifications, or “anything productive [she] can do with [her] hands while watching Netflix” (HarpersBazaar). 

 Then, the indelible scar of the shooting has lead her to a new irrevocable path. Her powerful speech made the headlines by storm with her attack on Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA). Only three days after Parkland Florida shooting incident, which resulted in 14 students and 3 teachers dead and many more injured, Gonzalez delivered her 11-minute speech with a call-and-response of their slogan “We call B.S” in response to ineffective Washington. Gonzalez received much public attention, support, as well as backlash following her interview of NRA representative Dana Loesch. Only a week after her speech at Fort Lauderdale, Gonzalez led and other students nationwide participated in the “March for Our Lives” protest, in which she gave a speech, calling for people to “empathize rather than feel apathy.”

 The story of Gonzales proves age means nothing in times of change; rather, uninfluenced by interest groups and political strings, she shows how teenagers can be the true embodiment of sincerity and integrity— the essential factors of progress to overcome pervasive pessimism and cynicism. She didn’t need to learn politics to lead the movement; her passionate participation in diverse activities taught her how to communicate and empathize with her surroundings.

 Will there be a Korean Gonzalez someday? Truly, it cannot be denied that the reality of being a Korean student crammed in classroom and textbook offers less room for an initiative. However, who is ever to succeed merely by putting blame on others? Our hearts, as full with passion as the heart of Gonzalez, will manifest their hotness when everyone else ceases an attempt in the loss of hope.
