A passion for design, knowledge of advanced English, and a new name make Teo Yang, age 34, a Korean rising star in the international interior design industry.

Born in Seoul, for two years he attended a very progressive grade school in Scottsdale, Arizona. Returning to Korea for middle and high school, he found himself a bit of an outsider. But in his isolation, he spent much of his free time reading both Korean and foreign design magazines and books. When he graduated from high school, he knew what he wanted to do. He went to the Art Institute of Chicago. 
 
Teo Yang said that while still in Korea, it’s important to do adequate research about possible foreign universities. That includes finding out which schools are well equipped with learning centers for helping foreign students. Often that information is not easily found on the Internet, but it can be discovered by serious research.

Yang also warned Korean students who have lived abroad are often surprised how inadequate their English can be when they return to western countries to study at the university level. He spent a good amount of time attending an English-as-a-second-language self-help group while in Chicago.
 
He noted many Korean students, when they go to study abroad, often fail. Too many young Koreans don’t recognize how much more difficult it is to actually graduate in Western schools. As a result, many Korean students party too much with other Koreans, only to realize when it is too late they are flunking out of school. Yang strongly recommends young Koreans not to overly socialize with other Koreans and to focus more on studying.
 
Yang soon realized he wanted to specialize in interior design, because the discipline addresses the needs of all five of the human senses to create creative living spaces. He then moved to Los Angeles, since he was fascinated by the city’s art deco and Hollywood regency traditions. He studied at the very competitive Art Center in Pasadena and through an internship was selected to study in Berlin, Germany.
 
Since the European design scene is more creative than the American commercial scene, Yang wanted to continue to work in Europe. And for nine months, he was able as the first Asian to work in the Amsterdam studio of his hero, Mercel Wendar. But because of his military obligation, he had to return to Korea.
 
Upon completion of his obligation, he discovered that he had same name as a well-established architect, Yang Jin-seok. As a result, there was soon much confusion in the media. To avoid embarrassment, with the help of a Buddhist monk, he changed his name to Teo. Since the name change, Teo has experienced an explosion of commercial success. He now employs two designers who work with him in his han’ok office in Bukchon, Seoul.

그는 곧 자신이 인테리어 디자인을 더 배우고 싶다는 것을 깨달았는데, 이유는 이 과목이 창의적인 주거 공간을 만드는 데에 인간의 오감을 다 다루기 때문이었다. 그래서 그는 로스엔젤레스로 이사를 했는데 이유는 그가 이 도시의 멋과 헐리우드 시대 전통에 매료되었기 때문이었다.
