What are the chances of getting hit by space junk? While the odds are very low, there is growing concern over the space junk problem. In fact, researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are taking it very seriously.

Space is getting crowded as more and more junk piles up in space. Scientists say that there are tens of millions of both big and small cosmic litter in space, moving around the Earth. Then, what is space junk? According to NASA, orbital debris or space junk is a discarded man-made object orbiting around the Earth. It includes old launch vehicles, spacecrafts, dead satellites and even flecks of paint.

The amount of space junk has doubled in just ten years. It is all because humans have launched so many satellites. Russia left the greatest amount of space junk, followed by the United States and China. This is a rather serious issue, when we consider the possibility of debris falling down to Earth and landing on someone, or colliding with working satellites.

Researchers are stepping in with a variety of solutions to clear space. A space center of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, has announced earlier this year that they are designing CleanSpace One – a sort of vacuum cleaner in the sky that will be able to get close to the debris and grab it with a big claw. The space vacuum cleaner will be unveiled in three to five years.

우주 쓰레기의 양은 십 년 사이에 두 배나 늘었다. 이는 인간이 너무 많은 인공위성을 발사했기 때문이다. 러시아가 가장 많은 우주 쓰레기를 배출했고 그 다음으로 미국과 중국이 따른다. 이것은 잔해가 우주로 떨어져 사람을 친다거나 작동하는 인공위성과 충돌할 경우를 고려했을 때 꽤나 심각한 문제다.

연구원들은 우주를 청소하기 위해 다양한 해결책을 모색하고 있다. 스위스 로잔연방공대의 우주 센터는 우주의 청소기 일종으로 우주 쓰레기에 접근해서 큰 갈퀴로 낚아챌 수 있는 클린원스페이스를 제작 중이라고 올 초에 발표했다. 우주 청소기는 3~5년 내에 공개될 것이다.
