March 14 was White Day. It was also a very meaningful day for the British Embassy in Seoul. It held a special party for alumni who received scholarships to study in the UK. More than 130 people attended the special party. A talented tenor named Yun Jung-soo came to perform at the event and made the party even more special. The Teen Times had the honor to be invited to the exclusive party.

The British-style Residence inside the British Embassy in Seoul was filled with well-dressed Chevening alumni. The Chevening is a renowned scholarship that allows South Koreans and North Koreans to study at British universities. The scholarship covers the full cost of one year’s postgraduate study in the UK.

The scholarship has brought more than 38,000 scholars to study in the UK since it started in 1983. Around 1,100 Koreans have been supported by the Chevening program so far. Leading Chevening Korean alumni include former Prime Minister Chung Woon-chan, former Health and Welfare Minister Choi Kwang, Chief Presidential Secretary Yim Tae-hee, and the president of the National Information Society Agency 한국정보화진흥원 Kim Sung-tae. In the 2011-2012 Chevening program, 25 Koreans were selected to receive scholarships.

“The Chevening scholarship is a prestigious worldwide scholarship program, funded by the British government. About 2,000 scholars and fellows from around the world receive awards to study in the UK each year. The Chevening scholarship scheme aims to provide opportunities for potential leaders, decision makers, and opinion leaders to study in the UK so they can contribute to the future development of their country,” explained Jenny Hong, the senior media officer at the British Embassy.

Tenor Yun Jung-soo, who is the first South Korean artist to be granted an Exceptional Talent visa by the British government, shined at the event by singing beautiful pieces. The visa is given to talented individuals who are world leaders in the arts or sciences. Exceptional talent visas were introduced in 2011 to encourage world leaders or those with potential in the fields of sciences, humanities, engineering and the arts to live and work in Britain. The Korean singing sensation has won multiple international music awards and studied at the International Academy of Voice at Cardiff University in Wales on a full scholarship.

“I’m glad to have all of you here tonight. Students who went to study in the greatest educational institutes in the UK can come back and share their experiences in Korea and develop a long-term relationship with the UK,” said British Ambassador to Korea Scott Wightman. 

재능 있는 한국 학생들을 초청한 영국 대사관

3월 14일은 화이트데이였다. 화이트데이는 서울의 영국 대사관에게 아주 의미 있는 날이기도 했다. 영국 대사관은 영국에서 공부하기 위한 장학금을 받은 수혜자들을 위한 특별한 파티를 열었다. 130명 이상의 사람들이 그 파티에 참석했다.

재능 있는 테너 윤정수가 그 행사에서 공연해 그 파티를 더욱 특별하게 만들었다. 틴타임즈는 이 특별한 파티에 초대되는 영광을 안게 됐다. 서울의 영국 대사관 안에는 영국식 관저는 잘 차려 입은 쉐브닝 동창들로 가득 찼다. 유명한 쉐브닝 장학금은 남한과 북한의 사람들에게 영국 대학에서 공부할 수 있게 혜택을 준다.

장학금은 영국의 대학원 1년 학비 전액에 해당한다. 쉐브닝 장학금은 1983년부터 38,000명 이상의 학생들을 영국에서 공부하도록 도와주었다. 여태까지 약 1,100명의 한국 학생들이 쉐브닝 프로그램의 지원을 받았다.

대표적인 한국의 쉐브닝 장학금 수혜자로는 정운찬 전 국무총리, 전 보건복지부 장관 최광, 전 대통령 비서실장 임태희, 그리고 한국 정보화 진흥원 김성태 원장 등이 있다. 2011년부터 2012년 쉐브닝 프로그램에서는, 25명의 한국인이 혜택을 받게 되었다.

“쉐브닝 장학금은 명성 있는 미래의 장학 프로그램으로, 영국 정부에 의해 지원을 받는다. 전 세계의 약 2,000명의 장학생과 연구원들이 매년 영국에서 공부하도록 장학금을 받는다. 쉐브닝 장학금 제도는 잠재적인 지도자들, 의사 결정자, 그리고 오피니언 리더들이 그들 나라의 미래 발전에 기여할 수 있도록 영국에서 공부할 수 있도록 기회를 부여 받는다.”라고 영국 대사관의 홍보 담당자 Jenny Hong이 설명했다.

한국인 최초로 영국 정부에서 우수인재비자를 받은 테너 윤정수는 아름다운 곡을 노래함으로 행사장을 빛냈다. 그 비자는 예술과 과학계의 세계 지도자인 재능 있는 사람들에게 주어진다.

우수인재 비자는 세계 지도자들을 고취하고 과학, 인문학, 공학, 그리고 예술 분야의 잠재적 인재들이 영국에서 일하면서 살 수 있도록 2011년에 도입되었다. 노래에 놀라운 재능을 가진 한국인들은 수 많은 국제 음악상을 수상했으며 웨일즈의 카디프 대학의 국제 아카데미에서 전액 장학금을 받으며 공부 하기도 했다.

“오늘 밤 이곳에 여러분 모두와 함께 할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다. 영국의 훌륭한 교육 기관에서 공부하기 위해 간 학생들은 한국에 돌아와 그들의 경험을 나눌 수 있으며 영국과 장기적인 관계를 발전시켜 나갈 수 있습니다,”라고 주한 영국 대사 스콧 와이트먼이 말했다.
