The dispute between Apple and Samsung is about to get more intense. The patent war between the two strongest rivals heated up after Apple recruited an army of Korean-American contract attorneys and document readers to better prepare for the fight. The realm of smartphones and tablets is highly confusing these days due to a series of patent cases. Aside from the two law firms Apple is already working with, it now has access to 73 additional Korean lawyers as well as 20 document reviewers of the same ethnicity.

Morrison & Forester is working on Apple’s patent claims against Samsung, and Wilmer Hale is defending Apple against Samsung’s claims. According to the two firms, Apple faced countless challenges as Samsung produced loads of Korean language documents in two federal lawsuits in California. As there is a high risk of Apple missing out on vital information and potentially incriminating evidence in the Korean documents, the newly-hired Korean-American lawyers were a must.

The recruitment of Korean-American lawyers sends out a clear message to Samsung. The Korean language barrier is surmountable when a huge stack of cash is at stake. The latest move from Apple comes only less than a week after the giant made proposals to Samsung Electronics and Motorola to settle pending litigation in exchange for royalty payments. The move also indicates Apple’s flexibility and willingness to make deals with competitors. Samsung’s officials have kept silent and moved on with filing additional lawsuits, pointing out that the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 infringed upon three of its patents.

Who has the upper hand in this high-stakes battle? Apple’s remarkable budget is presumably large enough to make attractive offers to the world’s best solicitors and barristers. Its market capitalization is now $500.1 billion, which is at least twice the market cap of all but three other U.S.-listed public companies such as ExxonMobil, PetroChina and Microsoft. Dow Jones reports and industry watchers agree that Apple is waiting quite comfortably due to its financial resources. Whether going head to head in a legal battle or ending it with a peaceful and perhaps satisfying settlement for both sides, the successors of Steve Jobs are ready.
