Charming their way to the top of the charts, the boys were successful in their comeback. As expected, every track on the latest album was dazzling and catchy. Internet portals have been busy in the last few weeks promoting their return. Top boy band Big Bang recently made its return to the music scene. Luckily for the group, the loud and negative voices surrounding Daesung and G-Dragon have been silenced thanks to its strong fan base and continuous efforts from management. So, without any obstacles in their path, the boys thought they were off to a great start with their new album.

The “Big Bang Alive Tour 2012” kicked off at Olympic Gymnastics Stadium. The 25-city, 16-nation world tour is to promote the new album and expand the group’s global fan base. Unfortunately, G-Dragon, T.O.P., Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri were not at optimum condition for the opening concert. Big Bang fans may blame the nasty weather since they were sneezing and coughing sporadically. By all means, in spirit, the five members were more energetic than ever. “It’s true that we are not in top condition, but there’s no doubt we will make sure that our fans don’t notice it,” said Taeyang during a press conference. Surely, the group’s vocalist kept his word. As for the others, they failed to match his level of energy.

Despite Big Bang’s godlike presence in the music industry, the first night of the opening concert was a mixed bag. Even the most dedicated fans commented that even after taking their less than perfect health into consideration, the concert offered little new. The boys’ agency, YG Entertainment, did indeed invest a large sum of money and time to prep for the concert. To provide an overall upgrade to the show, creative director Laurieann Gibson, known for her Lady Gaga fame, was hired to make her input. It turned out that her influences added little excitement and actually worked to the concert’s detriment.

Some believe the boys may be suffering from overexposure. Perhaps a little bit of courage is required to say the following. Five years into their careers, the band has accomplished a lot. Sadly, they are going through the same thing over and over again instead of adding some new spice into their music or performance. Once again, I am being extremely brave for saying this since, as most of the readers know, we are discussing a group that is godlike in Korea. And perhaps this status allowed them to not give their best on stage although all five members suffered from compromised health conditions. And obviously, they can do this because none of the predominantly teenage female crowd cares. Even to the most off-pitch and out of sync stage acts, the audience responded with cheers.

Thanks to Gibson, the show did have moments where it was a greatest-hits tour of a seasoned American pop artist. The pyrotechnics and the much colorful lighting created moods unseen in general concerts in Korea. Sadly, the whole Lady Gaga experience didn’t quite work out for the heartthrobs. Thanks to all the visual packaging, the fun of the concert was taken out. Surely things would have looked great in photographs but all the nonsensical computer-generated images on the giant screens and background were of comic value in reality. Now turning the fingers away from Gibson, the boys were conspicuously independent on stage, never interacting. There were no choreographed dances or singing. Now, we are talking about Big Bang, Korea, and undoubtedly Asia’s, number one boy band. The whole Gibson this and that is yes, true. However, the boys failed to maintain their vibrant character. Perhaps ego has worked its way up? Maybe that is the case. No, on this particular night, they did not deliver the whole package. Shouldn’t such idol stars always maintain their optimal shape at least on stage?

안타깝게도, 레이디 가가와 했던 여러 무대 경험들이 이 우상들에게는 맞지 않았나 보다. 여러 시각적인 포장 덕분에, 이 콘서트의 재미는 있었다.

물론 사진 상으로는 멋져 보일지 몰라도 엄청나게 큰 화면에 터무니없는 컴퓨터로 만든 이미지들과 배경은 사실 코믹스러웠다. 현재 깁슨에게 책임을 묻지 않은, 빅뱅은 눈에 띄게 무대에서 결코 조화를 이루지 못하고 따로 따로 놀았다. 안무를 짠 춤도 노래 실력도 없었다.
