Yeosu in South Jeolla has been incredibly busy preparing for the nation’s second world expo. Excited over its opening on May 12, the city recently celebrated a 100-day countdown. The Yeosu Expo Organizing Committee announced that construction is continuing and all preparations are more than 93 percent complete. Committee officials said the second world expo will once again unveil its charm.

It appears that Yeosu has been meticulously preparing for the International Exposition Yeosu Korea 2012. With the nation’s image at stake, the committee has been right on schedule to complete the construction of facilities. To recognize its 100 day countdown, President Lee Myung-bak, the heads of municipal governments and around 800 citizens gathered at the southwestern port city.

A total of 2.71 million square meters of land in the city has been fully renovated. It would be fair to point out that the previous landscape of the placid seaside area has all changed. Committee officials have announced that 21 pavilions will enter the next phase of operation in March. For perfection, three dress rehearsals will be arranged before the expo officially kicks off on May 12. On the verge of completion are landmark buildings such as the Big-O and Sky Tower. The Big-O is a multi-functional complex that will accommodate various expo events. The facility, which covers a coastal area of 88,000 square meters, was named for a giant O-shaped 45 meter tall structure floating on the sea’s surface.
Following the Daejeon Expo in 1993, the Yeosu Expo will allow the nation to become the world’s 10th country to host the global event at least twice. Considered as one of the world’s three largest festivals, the expo, organized by the Bureau International des Expositions, is as popular as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. Back in 1993, the Korean government invested 1.6 trillion won. Even today, many believe that the expo was the key in paving the way for Korea’s ascent into an information and technological powerhouse.

We can expect that the upcoming expo will be hugely beneficial. Economists and analysts are expecting 12.1 trillion won worth of production benefits. Furthermore, there may be 5.7 trillion won worth of added value and a possible creation of 79,000 jobs. The event will possibly bring together the representatives of 106 countries and nine international organizations. Approximately 10 million people from Korea and abroad are expected to participate.

전라남도에 위치한 여수는 우리나라의 두 번째 엑스포를 준비하느라 굉장히 분주한 나날을 보내고 있다. 5월 12일 개장을 앞두고, 여수는 최근 100일 카운트다운에 들어갔다.

여수 엑스포 조직 위원회는 아직 건설이 계속되고 있으며 모든 준비는 93퍼센트 이상 완성되었다고 발표했다. 위원회 관계자들은 이 두 번째 엑스포는 다시 한번 그 매력을 뽐낼 것이라고 밝혔다.

여수는 2012여수세계박람회를 세심히 준비해온 것 같다. 우리나라 이미지가 걸린, 박람회 위원회는 시설 완공을 위해 예정대로 잘 준비해왔다.

100일 카운트다운을 기념하기 위해서, 이명박 대통령과, 지방자치 정부의 대표들과 약 800여명의 시민들은 항구도시 여수에 모였다. 총 2백71만 평방미터 면적의 땅이 개조되었다. 이전에는 조용한 해변지역이 완전히 바뀌었다고 말 해야 할 것이다.

위원회 관계자들은 21개의 경기장들이 3월 다음 단계에 접어들 것이라고 발표했다. 완벽을 기하기 위해서, 세 번의 총연습이 5워 12일 공식적인 엑스포 개정 전에 있을 것이다.

빅오나 스카이 타워와 같은 주요 건물들이 거의 완성되어가고 있다. 빅오는 다기능 복합건물로 다양한 엑스포 행사를 개최할 것이다. 88,000 평방미터의 해변을 차지하는 그 시설은 해수면에 뜨는 45미터 높이의 큰 O자형 건물이라 빅오라고 이름 지어졌다.

1993년 대전 엑스포에 이어, 여수 엑스포는 우리나라를 세계에서 최소한 두 번 이상의 엑스포를 개최한 10번째 국가로 자리매김하게 할 것이다. 세계에서 세 번째로 가장 큰 축제로 여겨지는, 엑스포는 국제박람회기구에 의해 만들어졌으며, 올림픽, 피파 월드컵 만큼의 인기가 있다.

1993년에, 한국 정부는 1조6천억 원을 투자했다. 오늘날도, 많은 사람들은 엑스포는 한국을 기술과 정보의 요지로 발전시키기 위한 길을 열어주는 중요한 것이라고 생각한다.

우리는 다가오는 엑스포로 큰 혜택을 기대할 수 있다. 경제학자들과 분석가들은 12조 1천억 원 가치의 생산 혜택을 기대하고 있다. 더군다나, 5조 7천억 원 가치의 부가가치와 7만9천여 개의 일자리 창출이 기대된다.

엑스포는 106개 국의 대표들과 아홉 개의 국제 기구를 하나되게 할 것이다. 국내외에서 약 1천만 명의 사람들이 참가할 것으로 기대된다.
