To reform and prepare for the upcoming elections, former party chairwoman Park Geun-hye was brought back to lead the party. Without any doubt Park is no newcomer in the game of politics. And it is absolutely clear now that she has geared up to throw a fierce battle with her opponents in the upcoming presidential election this year. Recently, Park made a rare appearance as a guest on a late-night TV talk show.

Sharing her stories as the daughter of late President Park Chung-hee and her motives for entering politics in 1997, Park’s move was to get closer to the public. Three months ago, Park gave a speech at a university in Daejeon. Her speech drew media attention due to her choice of clothing and presentation style, which resembled the late Steve Jobs. All these are clear indications that she is up for a major makeover to turn herself into a more approachable and sociable politician.

Joking around with the co-hosts of the SBS program and engaging freely in conversations about her new rival Ahn Cehol-soo, Park was smooth and sociable. So, yes, the Ahn factor brought fear and tension to the Grand National Party. The drastic change can be considered as Park’s way of sharpening her tools before going head to head with her opponent. Park’s long lived nicknames such as ice princess and notebook princess will definitely be left in the closet for some time; at least for the time being.

Although it would be fair to argue that Park’s first TV appearance on a late night show arrived due to the computer mogul’s threat on her political ambitions, perhaps the Ahn factor was needed in Korean politics. Aside from comparing the public polls between Ahn and Park, something was missing in Korean politics for a very long time. As a matter of fact, this missing factor had never been thought about. There was no communication between the young Koreans and the politicians. The first and most important reason behind Ahn’s popularity comes from his efforts to pay attention to the young generation in Korea.

How did Park do on her first try? Her personal story as the daughter of a president was intriguing. By bringing out the tragedies that she had to overcome, viewers had an opportunity to see another angle of Park not as a politician but as a human being. Park’s mother was shot dead by a North Korean spy in 1974 and her father was assassinated by the director of the KCIA. Viewers must have realized that it is one thing for the general public to know the story through history and it is another for the surviving family member to talk about it openly to the public. Sure, it is a political strategy and a move carefully and articulately calculated by her political analysts and staff members from her camp. Then again, there isn’t a single politician who isn’t cautious. What is positive about Park’s move is that soon enough, the nation’s politicians will soon come out of their closets and expose themselves more to the public. Whether the images are appealing or not is for the public to decide. the Ahn factor made have brought disorder and confusion to the GNP. However, it was a shock the nation’s politics needed for a long time.
