On September 25, nearly 300 elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide participated in a very meaningful writing event. The 2011 English Writing Competition was held in Paju and was hosted by World Vision, Digital Daesung, and Times Core. This event was a valuable chance for the young participants to think about the real meaning of sharing. On October 22, an award ceremony was held at the World Vision’s headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul. 

We are living in a global village and people on Earth are our neighbors. Unfortunately, countless people in poorer countries are dying of hunger and diseases. Countries in the African continent are especially suffering from a shortage of food and clean water. Sadly, a large number of children are dying every second. However, we can save their  lives by giving them a helping hand.

On a sunny day in September, students from all across the country gathered together to think about the meaning of sharing. They expressed their opinions in a paper in English. Middle and high school students watched the movie, “War Don Don.” As for elementary school students, they watched a movie about water titled “Africa - the War for Water.” After watching the movies, they started writing about the things they could do to help the people in need as future global leaders. Using their pens and pencils, the participants did their very best to fill in the blanks front and back with their thoughts about sharing.

The staff members at Times Core evaluated their writings for three weeks. There were so many great essays and it wasn’t easy to choose only a handful of winners out of nearly 300 participants. After a series of reviews and discussions, three Grand Prize winners were chosen: Cho Hyo-jin (Baekma High School), Lee Se-yeon (Seongdeok Girls’ Middle School), and Choi Woo-suk (Jamwon Elementary School). Their vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammar clearly stood out. You can see their original writings on the The Teen Times website (www.teentimes.org).

Other students also won First Prize, the Prize of Excellence, and Participation Prize. On October 22, the award ceremony was held at the World Vision’s headquarters in Seoul. The winners were awarded with certificates and prizes such as laptop computers and free tickets to subscribe to The Teen Times or The Kids Times for six months.

“Everyone did a wonderful job. Congratulations to you all. I had a really hard time selecting the winners,” said Julia Baik, editor-in-chief at Times Core in her congratulatory speech. “I did enjoy reading your writings and I hope it had been a great chance for you to think about the less fortunate in other countries. I’m sure you now know how lucky you are. You should thank your parents and country for providing you with food and clean water every day.”

The writing competition also helped students learn the importance of writing. Writing skills are essential for global leaders since they get to communicate with people all over the world through emails and reports. All in all, the meaningful event was a great chance for our future leaders to learn more about the world we live in.

2011 월드비전 영작문대회

9월 25일, 전국에 있는 약 300명의 초, 중, 고 학생들이 매우 의미 있는 영작문 대회에 참가했다. 영작문 대회는 파주에서 열렸고 월드비전, 디지털 대상 그리고 타임즈 코어에 의해 주최되었다. 이번 행사는 어린 참가자들에게 나눔의 진정한 의미에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 귀중한 기회가 되었다. 10월 22일, 서울 여의도에 있는 월드 비전 본사에서 시상식이 열렸다.

우리는 지구촌에 살고 있고 지구에 사는 사람들 모두 우리의 이웃들이다. 불행하게도, 가난한 나라들의 수많은 사람들이 굶주림과 질병으로 죽고 있다. 아프리카 대륙의 나라들은 특히 식량과 깨끗한 물 부족으로 고통 받고 있다. 안타깝게도, 많은 어린이들이 매일 죽어나가고 있다. 하지만, 우리는 그들을 도와줌으로써 생명을 구할 수 있다.

9월 어느 화창한 날에, 전국에서 온 학생들이 나눔의 의미에 대해 생각하기 위해 함께 모였다. 그들은 영어로 종이에 그들의 의견을 표현했다. 중고등학생들은 “워돈돈”이라는 영화를 봤다. 초등학교의 경우, “아프리카-물의 전쟁”이라는 물에 관한 영화를 봤다. 그 영화를 본 후, 그들은 미래의 세계 지도자로서 도움이 필요한 그 사람들을 돕기 위해 할 수 있는 것들에 대해 글을 쓰기 시작했다. 펜과 연필을 사용해, 그 참가자들은 나눔에 관한 그들의 생각을 빈칸 앞뒤를 채우려고 최선을 다했다.

타임즈코어 기자들은 3주간 그들의 글들을 평가했다. 매우 많은 글들이 있었고 약 300명의 참가자들 중 소수의 합격자들을 고르기란 쉽지 않았다. 일련의 검토와 논의 후, 3명의 대상 수상자들이 선택되었다: 조효진(백마고등학교), 이세연(성덕여자중학교) 그리고 최우석(잠원초등학교) 그들의 어휘, 문장 구조 그리고 문법은 분명 돋보였다.여러분은 틴타임즈 웹사이트(www.teentimes.org)에 그들의 원본을 볼 수 있다.

영작문은 또한 글쓰기의 중요성을 배우는데 도움을 주었다. 글쓰기 능력은 세계 지도자들이 이메일과 기사를 통해 전 세계 사람들과 의사소통을 해야 하기 때문에 필수적이다.

대체로, 그 의미 있는 행사는 우리가 사는 세계에 더 많이 배울 수 있는 우리 미래의 지도자들에게 좋은 시간이었다.
