In the 21st century, giving presentations is very important whether it be in business or in the nonprofit sector. Many individuals do not know how to give persuasive and purpose-driven speeches. Even more students are clueless about the proper procedures that need to be taken in order to provide a presentation with the right elements. On Saturday, October 15, The Teen Times visited Grace Academy to teach students about public speaking by practicing mock presentations.

The academy is a Christian private school that consists of more than 200 students. The school provides high quality education for students from first grade in elementary to their senior year in high school. The location is very exclusive. The academy itself is even more so.
In the city of Incheon sits a cozy building where classes are held. On the same block, there is an extravagant church with many aesthetic features. Grace Academy’s roots come from Grace Church. Many of the church members send their children to the school, where educations as well as moral ethics are taught. Although it is a Christian school, the curriculum is liberal, and students are given more choices in classes they wish to take.

“The children of our church members attend the school. Our school is more focused on learning and teaching English,” said Kim Jin-young, an English teacher who teaches elementary and middle school students. “We strive to be a global leader in private schools,” added Vice-principal Lee Eun-yeong. Faculty members of Grace Academy welcomed The Teen Times to expand their students’ knowledge in giving presentations.

In the reception rooms of the church, a hunk of high school and middle school students awaited the arrival of The Teen Times affiliates. Editor-in-chief Julia Baik and Kevin Tak hosted the event. The students were there to develop presentation skills and voluntarily came on a Saturday morning. The event let students think critically, and mandated them to speak in front of a large audience of students and teachers.

Kevin Tak played the main role of speech leader and gave a lecture on the fundamentals and essential ingredients of a proper presentation. He began by introducing two key ideas: to convince and deliver. Students listened closely with open ears and open hearts. The lecture continued with the emphasis of S.W.O.T (strength, opportunity, threat, weakness) analysis and covering the importance of a thesis. Tak’s ultimate goal was to give advice, teach skills, and have standard practice giving presentations in English.

Then the topic of the presentation was relevant to the age group: “Should teenagers participate in reality show auditions?” Students were divided into six groups and given about two hours to prepare PowerPoint slides, and organize what they wanted to say. Many spectators came to support their classmates and to gain knowledge in public speaking as well.

When it was time to start the students’ presentations, a panel of three judges sat in a row. Tak was the lead judge, and native English speakers Ross Gardiner and David Riddel filled in the other two seats. The judges were honest, and sometimes hard on the students. Presenters were given special scenarios, and were challenged to overcome them. Tak did not hold back on the criticism. Palms got sweaty, minds went blank, and tears were shed.  

Gana Hooker, a high school and middle school English teacher at Grace Academy, thought the overall experience had a positive effect on the students. “It was a very practical experience for them,” she said. “It was good to expose the students to the reality of speech and giving presentations.”

Students did their best to express their ideas and thoughts. Many students were not confident in their English speaking skills to begin, but were very voluble and expressive in the end. Those who participated in the event were very eager to learn more. Students stayed in the halls of the church to get a chance to talk to Tak, and get more feedback even when the event was over. The nine-hour event had all of those involved captivated.


프레젠테이션의 재능을 보여준 그레이스 아카데미

21세기에, 프레젠테이션을 하는 것은 사업에서든 비영리 부문에서든 매우 중요하다. 많은 사람들은 설득력 있고 목적이 있는 연설을 어떻게 해야 하는지 알지 못한다. 심지어 더 많은 학생들이 올바른 요소들을 지닌 프레젠테이션을 하기 위해 필요한 적절한 절차에 대해 아무것도 모른다.

10월 15일 토요일에 틴타임즈는 모의 프레젠테이션을 연습함으로써 공개 연설에 대해 학생들에게 가르치기 위해 그레이스 아카데미를 방문했다. 그 아카데미는기독교 사립 학교이고 200명이 넘는 학생들로 구성된다. 그 학교는 초등학교 1학년에서 고등학교 3학년까지의 학생들에게 고급의 교육을 제공한다. 그 곳의 위치는 매우 독점적이었다. 그 아카데미 자체가 더욱 더 그랬다.

인천에서 수업이 열린 곳은 아늑한 분위기의 건물 내에 위치해 있었다. 블럭에, 많은 미학적 특징을 가진 화려한 교회가 있다. 그레이스 아카데미의 뿌리는 그레이스 교회에 있다. 교회 사람들 중 대부분이 그들의 아이들을 그 학교에 보낸다. 그 곳에서 도덕 윤리뿐 아니라 교육이 가르쳐진다. 비록 그곳이 기독교 학교이지만, 교육과정은 자유 민주적이고 학생들은 그들이 받고 싶은 수업을 더 많이 선택할 수 있다.

“우리 교회 사람들의 아이들은 그 학교에 다닙니다. 우리 학교는 영어를 배우고 가르치는데 더 중점을 둡니다,”라고 초, 중학생들을 가르치는 김진영 선생님께서 말씀하셨다. “우리는 사립 학교에서 세계 지도자가 되려고 고군분투합니다,”라고 이은영 교감선생님께서 말씀하셨다. 그레이스 아카데미의 모든 교사들은 틴타임즈가 프레젠테이션을 하는데 있어 학생들의 지식을 넓혀주는 것을 환영했다.

그 교회의 응접실에서, 한 무리의 중, 고등학생들이 틴타임즈의 도착을 기다렸다. 줄리아 백 편집장과 케빈 탁 편집장이 그 행사를 주최했다. 토요일 아침 학생들은 그곳에 자발적으로 왔다. 그 행사는 학생들이 비판적으로 생각하게 했고 많은 학생들과 선생님들 앞에서 말하도록 지시했다.

케빈 탁 편집장은 연설 지도자의 주된 역할을 했고 적절한 프레젠테이션의 기본 원칙들과 필수 요소들에 대한 강의를 했다. 그는 두 가지 핵심 아이디어들을 소개함으로써 시작했다: 납득시키고 전달하는 것.

학생들은 귀와 마음을 열고 주의를 기울였다. 그 강의는 S.W.O.T(힘, 기회, 위협, 약점)분석을 계속 강조했고 논지의 중요성을 포함시켰다. 탁 편집장의 궁극적인 목표는 충고를 하고, 요령을 가르치는 것이었고 영어로 프레젠테이션을 하는 일반적 관례를 가지고 있었다.

프레젠테이션 주제는 연령으로 나눈 그룹에 적절했다: “십대들은 리얼리티 오디션에 참여해야 하는가?” 학생들은 6그룹으로 나뉘었고 파워포인트 슬라이드를 준비하는데 약 두 시간이 주어졌다. 많은 관중들은 그들의 반 친구들을 지지하고 또한 공개 연설에서의 지식을 얻기 위해 왔다.

학생들의 프레젠테이션이 시작할 때쯤, 3명의 심사위원들이 일렬로 앉았다. 탁 편집장은 대표 심사위원이었고 원어민 로스 가디너와 데이비드 리드헬은 나머지 두 자리를 채웠다. 심사위원들은 정직했고 때론 학생들을 힘들게 했다.

프레젠테이션은 특별한 시나리오가 주어졌고 그것들을 극복하도록 요구 받았다. 탁 편집장은 비판을 저지하지 않았다. 손바닥이 땀에 젖었고 머리 속이 하얬으며 눈물이 나왔다.

그레이스 아카데미에서 중고등학교 영어 선생님인 가나 후커는 학생들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. “그들에게 매우 실용적인 경험이었어요,”라고 그녀는 말했다. “학생들이 연설과 프레젠테이션이 무엇인지를 접하게 되어 좋았어요.”

학생들은 그들의 생각에 표현하는 것에 최선을 다했다. 시작할 때 많은 학생들은 영어로 말하는 것에 자신이 없었지만 마지막에는 매우 열변을 토했고 표현할 줄 알아 보였다. 그 행사에 참여한 학생들은 더욱 더 배우고 싶어했다.

학생들은 탁 편집장님과 말할 기회를 얻기 위해 그리고 그 행사가 끝났을 때조차 좀 더 피드백을 받으려고 교회의 그 홀에 머물렀다. 9시간의 행사는 모든 관계자들을 매료시켰다.
