Paul Potts came to Korea to perform at the Suwon Outdoor Concert Hall 수원야외음악당 on October 3. Despite the chilly outdoor weather, the concert was a success and over a thousand people came to see him perform at the small venue. The concert was a free event that started at 7:30 pm.

For those of you who have not heard of Paul Potts, he’s someone who had his life changed a couple years ago. Born in 1970, Potts was working as a manager of a cell phone store when he decided to pursue what he loved: opera. From there, he made the decision to go on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent and won first place in 2007. Potts then went on to sing for Queen Elizabeth II and many other government officials and celebrities. He has since released three albums, and the first has already been certified multi-platinum. In addition, his version of “Nessun Dorma” has over 100 million combined views on YouTube.

The cold Monday night air was warmed with the legendary vocals of Potts. His voice resounded throughout the whole outdoor venue for thousands to hear and enjoy. He sang songs known throughout the world such as “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, “A Time for Us” from Romeo and Juliet, and “Speak Softly Love” from The Godfather, and many more. Such emotional songs brought smiles to many and tears to others. However, everyone left the concert in a good mood and many I spoke with were thankful that Potts took the time and effort to come and put on a free show in Korea.

There was a reason he won first place on Britain’s Got Talent and we were able to see it that night. The emotions emanating from him were so pure and heavy that they numbed your senses. He put on a truly amazing display of talent. I thank Potts for holding the free event and hope that our applause was satisfactory for the performance.

Ever since he shot to fame, Potts has become an icon of hope and motivation for so many people around the world. His voice alone is enough to give goose bumps to everyone listening, but it is the sheer willpower he had during those times that gave him what he has now. Every successful person has their slumps and their bumps. Every star that now shines once had a time when they were surrounded by darkness. However, those people who overcome the impossible moments become the best leaders and an inspiration to others who are going through similar troubles. I thank Potts and many others for overcoming those tough times so that others may learn and remain strong.

10월 3일 폴포츠가 수원야외음악당에서 내한공연을 위해 한국을 방문했다. 쌀쌀한 바깥 날씨에도 불구하고, 콘서트는 성공적이었고 천여 명의 사람들이 그의 공연을 보기 위해 그 작은 공연장을 찾았다. 콘서트는 저녁 7시 30분에 시작했으며 무료공연이었다.
